New father Jacob Zeno came to A&M to be a part of something special
Hailing from the Alamo City, signal-caller Jacob Zeno is preparing for his seventh season of college football and his first as a Fightin' Texas Aggie. In an exclusive interview, the San Antonio native spoke about adapting to Collin Klein's offense, the birth of his baby daughter and more.
A few quarterback notes
A&M offensive coordinator Darrell Dickey was in San Antonio today to see Jacob Zeno throw the ball around. When I was in the Alamo city last week, I was told by two sources that an A&M offer may spur a commitment from the Jay HS quarterback. Keep an eye on that. It'll be interesting to see if Dickey liked what he saw enough to make that offer.I've also been told Dickey will check out San Angelo gunslinger Maverick McIvor who just picked up an offer from Kliff Kingsbury and the Red Raiders in the last couple of days.Lastly, as of today, I think St Pius QB Grant Gunnell will end up at...Arizona, based on intel I've received in the last 24-48 hours. It sounds like his longstanding relationship with Mazzone and Sumlin will land him in Tucson. There's still a ways to go, but that's where I'd put my pick in. I also have reason to believe that A&M has become much less of an option than it was say a month or so ago.
Tuesday recruiting quick hitters
-As you may have seen on Twitter, Tim Brewster was out in Arizona. We've heard stud WR Jake Smith actually reached out to A&M so the Aggies got out there as quick as they could. Still think Jimbo and company are playing from behind, but they've got the firepower to catch up if given time. -If you're looking for who might be next, keep an eye on Andrew Coker. He openly told people he wanted to make a May decision, and it's now May. -Hallsville OL Blake Trainor is pretty close too from what we're hearing from sources in east Texas. -Heard in San Antonio yesterday that an A&M offer for Jacob Zeno would be big for the kid and family. Demarvin Leal even said he thought the Ags would have an outstanding shot. -Continue to hear the Aggies are very interested in 2020 A&M Consolidated CB Nate Floyd. I think they'd like to see him in camp before they offer though.-Speaking of camp, it sounds like from talking to a host of players and coaches that the Aggies will want to get a lot of their underclass evals and targets on campus to participate in camps. They want to see how the kids respond to coaching and a little pressure and how they compete against other top players.
Coaches on the road
Here's some stuff that Jason and I have gotten over the last day or so...A lot of people saw the Twitter post with Isaiah Spiller's father, Fred, and RB coach Jay Graham yesterday. I heard Graham spent the majority of the day at Klein Collins. It wasn't just a quick sit down. He met with a lot of folks that are important to Spiller. It seems like Isaiah is becoming more of a priority at the moment. Terry Price is making the rounds in Houston today to see commit Braedon Mowry as well as top target Marcus Stripling. I'm told he'll also check in on Ft Bend Ridge Point DE/OLB Nelson Ceasar. Ceasar would love an A&M offer and recently told me he would be making a summer visit. Offensive coordinator continues to keep tabs on SA Jay QB Jacob Zeno, but from what I hear, Grant Gunnell remains at the forefront of the QB plans. Memphis (TN) signal caller Jackson Walker has relatives in College Station and continues to be evaluated as well. The OC will also hit Ft Bend pretty hard from what I hear with stops at Clements, Dulles, and Travis. From Jason HowellTexas A&M is out and about today. The Katy area should see some maroon today. In addition to Stripling and Mowry, David Gbenda and David Ugwoegbu to see the staff soon. It also sounds like the Aggies will make it by St. Pius this week, maybe even today. It is no secret St. Pius is a hot spot for the Aggies with receiver commit Chase Lane and key targets 5-star QB Grant Gunnell and former FSU commit WR Jalen Curry . In the Dallas, I'm hearing the Aggies will stop in to see 2019 WR Dylan Wright today. The Aggies will also check in with DB commits Demani Richardson and Brian Williams.
Some more Sunday recruiting notes
-I've been told members of the A&M staff will be in San Antonio tomorrow to see DL commit DeMarvin Leal and possibly SA Jay QB Jacob Zeno. -A source with knowledge on Javonne Shepherd says he'll wait to make a decision after all his officials...this is a similar plan to Kenyon Green -Keep an eye on Dickinson TE Jalen Wydermyer. Folks down there talking like he may be getting close to a decision.-It sounds to me like A&M would take Andrew Coker and Blake Trainor and be pretty fired up about it. Trainor doesn't say much, but Coker has said he'd like to make a May decision.-At QB, I continue to hear the Aggies are still in pretty decent standing with Grant Gunnell. He visited Arizona this weekend, and we know the relationship he's got with Mazzone. However, if you're looking for another name under center that's getting some attention, it's Wisconsin commit Graham Mertz out of Kansas. -I'd call A&M and Nebraska the early top two for 2021 stud OL Hayden Conner.
