In the Trenches: Tough defensive lines abound in the SEC

The Southeastern Conference has developed a reputation for having strong defenses throughout the conference. Those defenses start upfront with a bevy of talented players along the defensive line.

A strong defense starts with a strong defensive line.

That helps explains why in recent years Southeastern Conference football teams have fielded some of the stingiest defenses in the nation.

In each of the past three seasons at least five teams have ranked among the nation’s top 20 in total defense. In 2011 five were ranked among the top 10.

In that span NFL franchises have selected eight SEC defensive linemen in the first round of the draft.
