Beyond borders: Aggies know national success requires national reach

Historically, Texas A&M football recruiting was limited to the region, but now, the Aggies can seemingly go into any state - and even other countries - to get players. The trend was highlighted in the 2020 cycle when A&M signed 14 out-of-state prospects.

Years ago, speaking at a Texas A&M basketball banquet, former Texas coach Abe Lemons said he was once asked to take a team to the Far East.

“Why the hell would I do that?” Lemons said. “I’ve already been to Lufkin.”

It was a funny line. It was also representative of how Texas A&M approached football recruiting. The Aggies’ recruiting sphere didn’t stretch far beyond its borders.
