'Once in a generation': Ben Malena reminisces on 2012 A&M team

Former Texas A&M RB Ben Malena joined us on Tuesday's edition of TexAgs Live to talk about his time and development while in Aggieland. Malena discussed how special the 2012 team was, playing alongside Johnny Manziel and his thoughts on A&M's upcoming season.

Key notes from Ben Malena interview

  • I picked A&M because it was a dream opportunity. I came from the suburbs south of Dallas with a dream to play football after high school. A&M was a prestigious university. I never thought I would have that type of opportunity close to home with the network and other things A&M has to offer. For different dreams and goals you have as an athlete, you think about how many young men actually get an opportunity to further their playing career. I grabbed it the first opportunity I got.

  • For me, I understood I had to come in and develop. I loved watching guys who came before me. Christine Michael and Cyrus Gray are, hopefully, two A&M Hall of Fame players. I was in the weight room and film room with them every day. When my chance came, I was ready mentally and physically for the different nuances of football and life. That all made the transition for me seamless.

  • Everything you do, you have to develop. It doesn’t matter what it is, family or business, you have to take time. I see the culture of football now like a business. But it’s a big man’s game, so you'd better make sure you have time to get developed, get more in professional conditioning and sharpen your mind. You’ll play better.

  • Before the last Texas game in 2011, we were suffering through the art of attrition. I was the next man up at the end of the season. It was a crazy season, if you remember 2011. We started top 10 and had all the talent in the world. It was exciting for me after waiting two years. It gave me a chance to show I could compete at a starter level. I wasn’t the best, but I knew I could execute. It was Texas. Even though we lost, it solidified to me that I could be an asset to the team.

  • The first Johnny Manziel season, has there been a year like that since? A&M has had great success, especially with recruiting. The type of people coming in are a lot different today. But energy, making storylines, coming into the SEC... To this day, people always talk to me about some part of that team and season. Hopefully, I can experience that as an A&M fan now and what it did for them. But truly, it was once in a generation.

  • I always say Duke was a good team, but that bowl game was just a crazy game. Most of our team was together for two years. The back and forth was like a video game. To slam dunk that era with that game and those players was the right way to send off that generation.

  • I came last year to the all-black uniforms, LSU game. The level of talent now is a lot different than what it was. That’s what you need to compete today. There are caliber players at each position, and that’s what A&M had based on an eye test. The emotions of the season come after that — coaching, execution and player accountability — a lot goes into the season. A&M has the resources to control those things, and if they do, everyone will have a tough time with them.

Boy was it! It was fun to watch Aggie football. If that hurricane didn't reschedule our opening tune up game we would've beat Florida I firmly believe that. Then we're in the national championship and no one beats us not even a rematch with Bama.

Imagine if the 4 team playoff existed back then. Still, i wanted that BCS crystal ball!

Really enjoyed the video. His hit on the Florida defender inside the redzone was a play I'll never forget (unlike the Florida defender).

Ben is a prime example that embodies the Aggie Spirit. He's in that class with Bucky and Rodney.

I say this after he gashed Southlake Carroll for 275 yards while at Cedar Hill.

I was so happy to see him commit to the Ags.

While Johnny and Co. got so much attention, Ben was that workhorse who never waivered. His head-bob on the punt at the end of the first Bama game drew the penalty that sealed the win that bumped the Ags into SEC contention and respect.

I really enjoyed this video. Ben Molina was a part of a very exciting offense. If Hurricane Issac had not caused us to reschedule our opening game at Louisiana Tech from 8/30/12 to 10/13/12, I think we would have beaten Florida because Johnny Manziel would have had an opportunity to find his footing before diving into SEC play. Instead, we were forced to jump headfirst into a physical showdown against Florida and play 12 consecutive games without a bye week because we lost our bye week in week 7 due to the rescheduling of our road game at Louisiana Tech. It's one of the more overlooked aspects of that season. The lack of a midseason breather makes Manziel's consistency and Kevin Sumlin's first-year management even more impressive.

If we had beaten Florida, we would have won the SEC West. I think we would have beaten Georgia in the SEC Championship Game to become a 12-1 SEC champion and probably defeated 12-0 Notre Dame in the BCS National Championship Game. Florida finished with an 11-1 (7-1 SEC) regular season record with only a 17-9 loss to Georgia and was ranked No. 3 before a 33-23 loss to Louisville in the Sugar Bowl.

Even if the 4-team playoff system had existed back then, we would not have made the playoffs because Notre Dame, Alabama, Florida, and Oregon would have been ranked in the top 4 after the conference championship weekend. After SEC East Champion Georgia lost to Alabama 32-28 in the SEC Championship Game to drop to 11-2, they slipped from No. 3 to No. 7. As a result, Florida rose from No. 4 to No. 3, and Oregon moved from No. 5 to No. 4. With that said, 2012 was the closest we came to winning the SEC West.

We would've faced/beat Mizzou in the SEC title.
*nevermind that was '13

Yes, Missouri won the SEC East in 2013, and we finished with a disappointing 8-4 (4-4 SEC) regular season record. If we had beaten Missouri in 2013 and 2014, Missouri would not have won the SEC East in either year. South Carolina would have won the SEC East in 2013, and Georgia would have won the SEC East in 2014.
