Jim Turner Q&A
Turner Film Study
Key notes from Jim Turner interview
- That first game, as a line coach, you want it to gel. Mike Elko was probably frustrated. Especially seeing UTSA pop some big runs. I understand, they were not whipping everything out. They didn’t utilize Le’Veon Moss until the second quarter. They had an angle on what they wanted to do in this football game. The big play from KC Concepcion on the punt return turned the game around. As a line coach, getting those five guys to gel in a new season takes a lot of reps and work. In the first game, it wasn’t completely there, and I know the coach wants to get them to where they were last year. Trey Zuhn II and Dametrious Crownover are both really good players.
- The angle of his set. He ended up in a confrontation with one of the defenders. He had to hold the guy on that play, but they both played well. The play action pass needs some gelling and work on that technique. Once you declare, it is a pass now. You run sell, try to get the linebackers to bite. They need to tighten that up a bit, but overall, a good performance.
- You can see that long UTSA run. Taurean York had to fill in the A gap; it became a dive play. You watched the play; he should’ve made the tackle. The other linebacker, Scooby Williams, had to fill in. You tell the running back to hit the grass and get the offensive line to make lanes. If the running back takes the gap, he’s all alone, but he did, and he took it to the house. It was a lesson for those linebackers to improve on.
- Bronco Mendenhall is a good coach. The odds of Utah State winning the game are slim, but in these positions, at least for me in the past, it is a brutal game for you because you want to dominate...but lot of times you don’t. Utah State will throw the kitchen sink at you. It’s a huge game for them. They’ll come ready to play. Mendenhall is an excellent coach.
- I think that’s what cost Texas in the game. Early in the season, it’s totally different than the Aggies. When you're playing another powerhouse, you've got to throw everything at them. They tried to pound the ball against us, but they still have a running back. He didn’t get the ball enough for Texas. That’s why they lost. It’s easy to look back and see what they could’ve done.
