Brauny's Best: Highlighting top high school performances from Week 3

With no shortage of standouts on the high school football gridiron, Ryan Brauninger dives into some of the top performances he saw in Week 3. Taking this week's spotlight is Texas A&M QB commit Helaman Casuga, who threw for six touchdowns in a 56-14 victory.

Another week of football is in the books, and once again, the Texas A&M commits turned up with a strong set of performances on the gridiron from last Thursday and Friday. This edition of Brauny's Best also features one of the best players in the state in 2027 and a 2028 signal-caller from DFW who had a ridiculous stat line.

Texas A&M Commits

Draper (UT) Corner Canyon QB Helaman Casuga

  • 21-26 passing, 289 yards, 6 touchdowns
  • 4 rushes, 30 yards

Of all the commitments, Casuga has probably been the most hard done by not finding his name in this article yet because he's been really stinking good so far as a senior. Coming off an injury, there were a lot of eyes on his development and what the on-field product would look like this fall. Well, the kid has emphatically answered any lingering questions. His confidence has returned, and it comes out on tape. He's seeing the game very well, and to me, it's manifesting in his timing, eyes and feet in the pocket. I've always been bullish on his ability to push the ball down the field, but the throws between the hashes, as well as his accuracy to the boundary, have been next-level so far this fall. I'm heading to Salt Lake City this week to see him play live. I'm looking forward to that trip.

State of Texas

2028 Life School Oak Cliff QB Camren Phillips

  • 16-23 passing, 361 yards, 6 touchdowns
  • 12 rushes, 107 yards, 3 touchdowns

The sophomore has been pumping out impressive numbers each week, but the eye-catching nature of 468 total yards and nine touchdowns will land him as my top performer in the Lone Star State this week. There are some really quality throws of many different varieties on that tape. For a young quarterback, he shows adaptability to alter body shape and arm angles to deliver the football as well as comfort in the pocket and making on-time throws. As a ball carrier, he's decisive and direct. It's clear, though, that he'd prefer to use his arm first and then his legs as a secondary option when plays break down. Overall, it's an arsenal that should be intriguing to follow down the road as his strength and speed continue to develop.

My Coverage

2027 Plugerville Weiss WR Tre Moore

  •  9 receptions, 156 yards

The Pflugerville Weiss Wolves found themselves on the wrong end of a seesaw affair against A&M Consolidated, but it had nothing to do with the outing by Moore, who is proving to be one of the best pass-catching prospects in Texas in the junior class. I had seen him over the summer at State 7-on-7 and thought he was solid, but I wanted to see him get a little more juice with his straight-line speed and change of direction. He has always been extremely gifted with the ball in the air as a contested catch winner, but was just a tick off with his lateral movement. It looked much improved on Friday night against a salty A&M Consolidated team. His stop-start and contact balance with the ball in his hands stood out, as did his maneuverability in tight areas. Then, his aforementioned traits as being a 50/50 winner shined brightest with an incredible catch deep down the middle of the field over two defenders.
