Key notes from Peter Burns interview

  • I came away from the Auburn vs. Oklahoma game feeling the same way as the Tennessee-Georgia games. Tennessee went toe-to-toe with Georgia, but I came away thinking highly of them. Same for Auburn. Jackson Arnold missed a couple of throws. He had moments looking like 2024 Arnold. He did that in Norman. What will it be like on a third down in front of 100,000 people in Kyle Field?

  • This won’t be a shootout. It is a get-right game for the defense. They got the monstrous victory against Notre Dame. The defense was probably pissed off, though giving up those plays to Notre Dame. An offense that is not great. You also found out about what Marcel Reed can do. It was almost a perfect win for A&M to get the dub, but get the film where they can still work on a lot of stuff. For Auburn, it can be slippery moving forward. They play Georgia soon. Then maybe Texas or something like that. It can be a dangerous spot for A&M, because Auburn is desperate. I like A&M in this one.

  • Landry Kiffin is dating LSU star Whit Weeks, posting, “I’m happy.” It is weird. Making it public with the hard launch this week is just noise. There is no way Ole Miss doesn’t start Trinidad Chambliss. He has been playing too well. But now he has to play a top-five defense in the country in Blake Baker’s LSU. Strange things can happen. I think LSU is a college football playoff team. I don’t think that for Ole Miss.

  • I think LSU beating Clemson on the road was a good test. It showed Clemson had some deficiencies, but I am still a believer in LSU. Garrett Nussmeier has been there, Brian Kelly said it is going to take something Herculean by Lane Kiffin to win. He may have to, even though it is in Oxford.

  • Mississippi State has been the biggest shock in college football. The offense has made a huge jump from being awful offensively last year. No one sees them coming. Jeff Lebby has been great. Tennessee is legit, though. I don’t think Mississippi State has enough to take down this team.

  • I am pissed off that Arkansas lost to Memphis. Now you have an 11 a.m. kickoff. Fans are not as invested. Notre Dame has the advantage here. If they beat Memphis, I’d think they’d be ripe for an upset. Arkansas’ defense is getting pushed around, and Notre Dame has enough to get the win here.

  • In a weird way, it gives them a buffer. If Oklahoma loses to Texas here, the committee may be like, “Well, they didn’t have John Mateer.” I am fascinated by that matchup because I am not sold on Texas. The biggest upset may be in Athens this weekend. I am sold on Alabama. They are legit. The best thing to happen to them was getting punched in the mouth by Florida State. Georgia showed a lot of holes in their game against Tennessee. I think Kalen DeBoer, Ty Simpson and the crew are going to be able to take advantage Saturday night.

  • We look at the numbers, Kirby Smart is 1-6 all-time against Alabama. Now, most of that was against Nick Saban. But last year, Alabama blew the doors off of them. Smart doesn’t get nervous for games, but maybe he is for this one. If Georgia loses here at home, where they never lose, it could mess with their psyche.
