Le'Veon Moss to miss 'significant period of time' with ankle injury

On Monday afternoon, Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko announced that running back Le'Veon Moss will miss a "significant period of time" with an ankle injury he suffered during the second quarter of A&M's 34-17 win over Florida on Saturday night at Kyle Field.

History might be doomed to repeat itself, but that doesn't necessarily mean the Aggies are doomed.

As Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko announced on Monday, All-SEC running back Le'Veon Moss will miss a “significant period” of time with an injury.

Elko described the injury as "unrelated" to Moss' knee and instead said that the tailback will have his ankle further evaluated following an awkward tackle on a second-quarter carry.

"He's going to have to go get it looked at, and we'll kind of figure out where it's at," Elko said. "It certainly will not end his season, but it's going to be a significant amount of time."

Needless to say, Moss will be unavailable on Saturday when A&M faces Arkansas in Fayetteville at 2:30 p.m. CT.

Moss missed the final four games of 2024 with a season-ending knee injury suffered early in a loss at South Carolina. A&M suffered down the stretch, going 1-4 in its final five to finish 8-5.

Le’Veon Moss has rushed for 389 yards on 70 carries with six touchdowns through six games this season.

When he hurt that ankle on a 7-yard run early in the second quarter vs. Florida, A&M had already amassed 238 yards of total offense. They mustered just 179 the rest of the night.

On his fourth of five carries, Moss scored from 22 yards out to put A&M up 21-14. The Aggies did not find the endzone until Rueben Owens II's 2-yard score with less than five minutes remaining.

"Rueben's a lot bigger than people give them credit for," Elko said. "Rueben's starting the hit his stride, which has been really good.

"Now, Rueben's got to be the primary ball carrier, and then that opens up some carries for Amari (Daniels) and for Jamarion (Morrow) to get in there, and they give us some good runs. ... I think it's a credit to what Trooper Taylor does with that group, and I think it's just a credit to those kids that they just work and they're ready to go when their numbers are called."

While the Moss' injury may hobble the offense, the Aggies are better able to absorb such a significant loss, even with a precarious stretch of road games ahead.

Just two weeks ago, Owens rushed for an A&M season-best 142 yards vs. Mississippi State. Against Florida, Morrow — a true freshman — scored his first career touchdown, a 22-yard catch out of the backfield. Even Daniels, who carried much of the load in Moss' absence last year, is heavily involved in the rotation.

Picking up the slack for Moss, Rueben Owens II tallied 17 carries for 51 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown against Florida.

Beyond the ground game, the Aggies have playmakers at receiver for quarterback Marcel Reed to distribute the ball to.

Mario Craver and KC Concepcion still rank first and fourth in the SEC with receiving averages of 105.7 and 74.5 per game, respectively.

Through the first six games with Moss last year, A&M averaged 413.3 yards and 31.0 points per contest. In 2025, those numbers jump to 458.5 and 34.7.

"I love Le'Veon," Elko said. "I wish Le'Veon was healthy. We're gonna miss him. He's been a warrior for this program. He's given us everything he had to get ready for this season. I hope this goes as fast and as smooth as it can, but injuries are a part of SEC football. And if we're going to allow injuries to impact or derail things, we can't do that."

Sure, the loss of a star — for any amount of time — could cause a flare-up of Battered Aggie Syndrome.

Now ranked No. 4 in the AP poll, A&M is off to its first 6-0 start since 2016, a season that was derailed by an injury to starting quarterback Trevor Knight.

But with the offense built by Elko and Collin Klein, the Aggies might weather the gloom of Moss' injury, skirt the doom and still make the Kyle Field cannon go boom.

NOTES

• Graduate defensive lineman Dayon Hayes was named SEC co-Defensive Lineman of the Week. He had a strip sack and a fumble recovery vs. Florida.

• Elko recognized the following individuals as "players of the week" inside the program: Nate Boerkircher (offense), Albert Regis (defense), Hayes (defensive line), Tyler White (special teams), along with scout teamers Tommy Colligan (defense), Nelson McGuire (offense) and Aidan Herrera (special teams). After not naming an offensive lineman of the week last Monday, Elko recognized “the entire offensive line.”

• Kick off for A&M's Oct. 25 road trip to LSU was announced to be 6:30 p.m. CT, and that game will be televised on ABC. The Aggies have not won at Tiger Stadium since 1994 and have lost six straight at Death Valley. A&M did not travel to Baton Rouge between '94 and 2013.

This is going to hurt.

Moss turns those 2-3 yard gains into 6 yard gains and those 8-10 yard ones into 20+ or touchdowns.

We have other running backs that possibly have the size, speed & vision Moss does, but not all in the same back.

It's brutal that Le'Veon Moss will miss a significant period of time with an ankle injury and even worse how it happened before a tough stretch of 3 consecutive road games in 4 weeks. I hope Moss can recover in time for the road game on Missouri on 11/8 after our second bye week. That road game at Missouri could have CFP and SEC Championship Game implications.

Need Morrow to step up. He looks like a special player.
