Morrison's Aggies still focused on improvement after three straight sweeps

Playing five of their last seven games on the road, Jamie Morrison's ninth-ranked Aggies will travel to Baton Rouge on Friday and Oxford on Sunday. The head coach joined TexAgs Live to speak on his squad's back-to-back sweeps last weekend.

Key notes from Jamie Morrison interview

  • Both the scoreboard and the way we played were in the right direction, especially in the Oklahoma game. I remember coming into that, making our team come in on edge. They are a good team that scared me. But our team was clicking at a high level. It got me fired up. I was pretty happy with the Sunday match against Arkansas. They hit .260 on us, which was abnormal for us. We have been No. 1 or No. 2 in hitting efficiency. There were some small things in there, but overall, really happy with how the weekend went and what's next.

  • Whenever you take over a program, there is a building that has to happen. The reason those seniors have become household names is that they have helped build this program into what it is. You've got a group of them that have been there since day one. Day 1, it wasn’t comfortable, but this group decided they wanted to keep pushing. Then you have a group of transfers that didn’t buy into the No. 9 team in the nation, they bought into the vision of what it would take to get to that point. From here on out, people are committing to the No. 9 team in the country.

  • Our team decided they wanted to roll up their sleeves, go to work, and build the program into what it is now. I could not be more honored. The other piece that has gotten me emotional is that they are amazing human beings. At my previous spots with the national team, it was you get these people around and they are good enough to stay around for life. Some are done and retired and don’t want to be a part of it. This four-year cycle of you get to know somebody and make them a part of your family. These emotional connections won’t go away. They just won’t be part of your day-to-day. You get an empty nest over and over again. It is a lot of them. There are a lot of different personalities that make up this team. And next year, it will be different. It will be beautiful and amazing, but different. They’ve meant a lot to this program. I was talking to Ava Underwood. This time has been special to celebrate this team, setting us up for the final regular season games and heading into the playoffs.

  • The biggest thing is getting people aligned over the vision and mission across the board. I think some of it is my own. I came back to this because I wanted it to be about mentorship and relationships. I wanted it to be about having alumni come back for 20 years and be a part of my life. That piece of belonging.

  • We are getting more consistent. It keeps getting longer and longer, our ability to do it. We started to let off the gas a bit. I took a timeout there. We have to finish this. We have started to get that muscle flex that we can play well for long periods. Oklahoma almost took Texas to five sets on Sunday. We have the ability to hold them down, not throwing knock-out punches, but being like a python that is slowly strangling something. We are going to play good volleyball until it gets annoying. We did that for nine sets in a row, and we have to continue to do it as we get into this weekend with two tough matchups.

  • Just focusing on getting better. As a program and individuals, we want to improve across the seasons and careers. Logan Lednicky is doing a lot of that right now. One point in the third set, they were fronting her, and leaving Lednicky in a one-on-one. She just keeps getting better. That is the thing that is most impressive right now. She has a good resume. She consistently looks for ways to improve.

  • It gets harder the better you get. When you come into the gym, by the time you leave, you will be so much better. These little changes are the hardest, because they are the tiniest changes. It is not easy. However, that next step is so challenging, finding tiny details, which for most people might not matter. But those tiny things that add up are what matter, what causes two points. It is really refining the small things, the attention to detail. It will matter to get you to the next point.

  • There is a football game in Baton Rouge on Saturday. If you are looking for something to do on Friday, it will be a feisty match. LSU will show some emotion through the net. They can light it up. Two physical left sides. They are playing good volleyball. 7 p.m. start on Friday night.
