He talks to opponents. He even talks to himself.
Regardless of who he’s talking to, Cashius Howell lets his play back it up.
For a third time this year, the relentless pass rusher has been named the SEC’s Defensive Lineman of the Week.
Howell shares the weekly honor with Ethan Burke of Texas.
On Saturday night in Death Valley, the Aggie pass rush terrorized LSU quarterbacks for seven sacks, and Howell led the way with a pair.
Speaking loudly, he delivered an even bigger sack on the game’s fourth play from scrimmage when he dropped Garrett Nussmeier for a 9-yard loss.
That set the tone, and his celebration only pumped up his teammates.
In total, Nussmeier was sacked five times, and backup Michael Van Buren Jr. was dropped twice.
Both of Howell’s contributions came against the former as he dumped Nussmeier early in the second quarter for a 6-yard loss.
LSU’s offensive tackles never had a chance, but very few men tasked with blocking #9 ever have.
Through eight games, Howell has 9.5 sacks to go along with 16 total tackles and 10.5 TFLs.
Having previously been honored as an SEC Player of the Week in Week 2 and Week 6, he is still the league’s leader in sacks and currently ranks third nationally behind Texas Tech’s David Bailey (10.5) and Ball State’s Nathan Voorhis (10.0).
At this rate, it would not surprise anyone if Roger Goodell spoke Howell’s name on April 23, 2026.
