He’s a ballplayer.
Yes, he looks like a defensive end, but he’s a baseball player.
And a damn good one, too.
For his exploits in Texas A&M’s sweep of Missouri, freshman outfielder Jorian Wilson has been named the Southeastern Conference’s Freshman of the Week.
Earning three starts during the Aggies’ 4-0 week, the 6-foot-4, 240-pounder was 6-for-12 with two home runs and four RBI.
“I knew we had to bring him along. It would have been a huge mistake to just thrust him in there and let him figure it out,” A&M head coach Michael Earley told TexAgs Live on Monday. “He needed to figure it out a little but really figure it out behind the scenes. He’s not there yet. He has not reached his potential.
“He’s not a finished product. He’s not there yet, but he’s an awesome kid. He works really, really hard, and because of his work ethic and how he brings it every day, you start to garner some trust. … He’s good. He’s going to make mistakes, but the reward that can be there with him is pretty high.”
Wilson’s best week yet started on Tuesday night against Houston Christian. In a 5-1 win at Blue Bell Park, the Hallettsville Hammer was 1-for-3 with a fourth-inning solo shot that left the bat at 110 mph and a heaven-kissing 46-degree launch angle.
In the next half inning, Wilson showed off his defensive capabilities as he delivered a strike from right field to cut down a Husky at the plate. Earley described the throw as “80 percent.”
“I just like to help my team win. Either one is great, as long as we’re winning,” Wilson said on Tuesday. “I’m trusting my coaches. I know what they’re telling me is good. They’re not gonna tell me something to make me worse, so I just try everything, and if it doesn’t end up working out, we scratch it, find something else.”
Earning the first SEC start of his career on Friday, Wilson rewarded Earley with a leadoff home run in the top of the fourth. Later in the inning, he drove in a pair with a two-out double and then stole third. In the closer-than-expected 11-9 win, he was 2-for-5 with three RBI.
In Sunday’s sweep-clinching 14-3 drubbing, he was 3-for-4 with a run scored. All of his hits were swings, with two of them being weakly hit infield knocks against the shift. The third was a rifled up the middle at 115 mph.
Earley has pushed back against Wilson being described as “raw,” electing for “inexperienced” instead. In just 15 games at the collegiate level, the Hallettsville youngster is hitting .343 with a 1.121 OPS, four home runs and 12 RBI.
Earning SEC weekly honors is also a new experience, as this is the first of Wilson’s budding career. He is the first Aggie to earn Freshman of the Week since Terrence Kiel II did so on Opening Weekend of 2025.
