No, and they need to get that ish and baseball off of ESPN.
NASCAR is a sport and the drivers are athletes.
It requires a high endurance, so I'd go with yes, they are athletes. Is a sport, eh.

It's more sporting than any judged activity (boxing is not "judged" as it can end in a KO or TKO). Those are competitions, not sports.

That was not my intent, but you could also argue that anyone who sits and drives for hours is also an athlete (i.e. a truck driver, the mail man, a commercial pilot, a drug smuggler, etc.) competing for your business.
I'd put most NASCAR drivers in a class of "athletic" individuals (endurance/mental focus/have to stay in trim shape to gain an advantage?) competing in a machine driven event.
