COLLEGE STATION, Tex. (KBTX) - A retired Texas A&M professor has passed away.

Dr. Arnold Krammer suffered a massive stroke on September 20.

Dr. Krammer was the son of Hungarian Jews who survived the Holocaust.

He has written a number of books, and began teaching German and American history at A&M in 1974.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Dr. Kramer was one of the finest professors I ever had at A&M and History 403 was one of the best classes I ever took as an undergrad or in graduate school. Ran into him numerous time around town over the years and he always remembered me, by name. When I was in grad school, he always had a word of encouragement when it was about to do me in. I'm sure I can say for all of his former students, he will be missed.

Non history major here, but one of my favorite classes at A&M. Couple hundred people in class and he knew me by name by week 2. Great teacher.

I'm always sad to hear about outstanding professors passing on.

And Ben, for someone from the class of '14, you sure sound like an old Ag. Having said that, considering the year you've had, I'm sure you feel older too. I was damned happy to hear about you and your old boss.
Hate is how progressives sustain themselves. Without hate, introspection begins to slip into the progressive's consciousness, threatening the progressive with the truth: that their ideas and opinions are illogical, hypocritical, dangerous, and asinine.
This is backed by data.

History major here, he was a great man. Would email him links to nazi memorabilia when I came across them for sale. Man loved what he did and impacted a lot of lives.

The history of Nazi Germany was my most memorable class at A&M. That man could tell a story. So sorry to hear about his passing. I have mini tape recordings of every one of his lectures from my class somewhere. I think they are in storage. I'll try to find them and digitize them if anyone is interested.

Edit: and dang that class was hard to register for.

Agreed. Literally the only class I ever looked forward to. Didn't matter how tired, sick, hungover, or all of the above I was, i ALWAYS went to his class. It amazed me how his class was him simply telling you the story of history, no notes, or slideshow, or text book.

The only class I did extra credit in. He suggested a book for me to read about how D-day was a successful failure, and write a paper. After I turned it in he spent at least 30 minutes in his office talking about what I thought about it, and what I had learned, etc., and made me feel like I had taught HIM something about history.

Great man, and great professor.

Had to be a senior to even register, IIRC.

Thankfully I was a student worker and back then and senior student workers got to register ahead of everyone except grad students.

Sad to read of his passing. I had him for history in 1983. One of the funniest things I remember was that he was teaching in front of a large class one day, giving the final lecture before either a midterm or final exam. The lecture hall doors were behind him. A girl walked into class, easily 10 minutes late. He must have caught her out of the corner of his eye, because without pause, he said, "And that's ALL you need to know in order to make an A on the test. Please don't tell anyone who wasn't here". Her eyes nearly bugged out. Well played! RIP, Professor.

I would be very interested in this. Any way to share copies?

And if you have any Terry's Anderson tapes laying around, I'd be all over those as well.

Ah man, that is sad. I never met Dr. Krammer (maybe once?) but I lived next to or with his step-son for nearly three years in the dorm and elsewhere. So sorry to hear about the family's loss. Nevermind the community's loss. I know he was a special guy.

The semester I took his nazi Germany class I had some personal issues arise with the family and withdrew for the semester. I continued to sit in on his class and absorb the knowledge he gave the class.

I was just thinking I would love my daughter to hear his lecture because she did a report on the holocaust and wondered if while retired he did any speeches. Wish I could hear him speak one more time. RIP

If you are able to digitize those lectures I would like a copy or to create a link to those for future Aggies to hear them

Mine too. I still remember everything from waking up at 6 in Aston to get to getting to that class in the Chem building.

Aug 2001.

I actually took German in high school from his wife.
His son was in my class.

The only show I remember by name was "Nazi America a Secret History". I don't have time right now to watch the entire 90 minutes, but just a quick check Dr. Kramer is in it at least once, around the 37 minute mark.

I'm going to set aside time this Sunday to go to my storage unit and track down the tapes. In one of the lectures he had two visitor come and talk to the class. They were holocaust survivors.

Took history of nazi Germany the last semester before I graduated.

I didn't have to study because every lecture was so captivating, it seemed like I memorized the material.

It was easily one of the most fascinating classes I took at A&M.

He was a wonderful historian and teacher. A&M was fortunate to have him.

I was walking around campus with my dad before the first football game this year, and I told him a few stories about Dr. Krammer when we walked past that building. Funny how something as simple as knowing your students by name can mean so much. Of course I guess it's not that simple when there are hundreds of them, but he managed. That might have been the only class I never skipped.

WOW.

So sorry to hear this. I'll echo the many sentiments here and say he was my most enjoyable Prof and History of Nazi Germany was such a great class. My own anecdote:

My Senior Year I had been trying to get into that class for 3 years. Never could get in. Finally, my last semester I tried once more and was left out yet again. The first day of class I just went to the class, sat through the first day and met him after class to ask him to squeeze me in. He looked me in the eye and said, "I tell you what, I'll squeeze you in if you promise to show up every day, and get an A to boot". I did, and I did. So glad I did too.

I really really hope A&M has some sort of tribute or memorial to him planned. He was a special teacher. So sorry to hear this.
