This hack may work for other things too but I've only noticed it on hotel reservations.
Sign up for the loyalty program for a given chain and then look for a room on the date you are traveling. Select a room and everything but stop just short of making the reservation. Then just kill the window.
Within a few minutes, I get an email from the hotel chain off for $50 off my next stay, along with a reminder to go ahead and book that trip.
This happened to me twice in the last week.
