So happy to do it Soul. 4 years ago, I was diagnosed with postate cancer. Thru all of this, the fact I could not donate (I donated a double every 3 weeks), just devastated me,

I'm now negative. I would love to get back to donating, but don't know if I qualify or the process. I welcome your thoughts!

More than likely yes. Most cancers are only 3 months to a 1 year deferral after treatment ends/ all clear given. Glad you recovered well.

Still a donation. Providing a small token item and reward points that can be redeemed are not a considered payment. Just a small thank you on behalf of transfusion dependent patients.

I concede.

Well done to the OP and the rest of you that participate in endeavors such as this.

I went in and looked at the regs and health code branching for cancer in our system. It is 1 year from last treatment.

Most blood centers adopt the AABB/ABC standard questionnaire so you should be gtg. Some centers will have longer deferral times based on their MD's but the minimum is a 1 year deferral according to regs.

As an aside - my wife is an OR nurse specializing in organ transplants. They've come close to losing donated organs a few times due to unavailability of platelets.

She cannot donate due to some blood issues so I have to go for both of us - or else..... Gotta keep her happy.

My first donation at Carter Bloodcare was in 1985. I have no idea how much I've given.

When you log into your donor portal to redeem points there is a donor history tab, it should tell ya.

My ire is not at the blood centers. It is with the hospitals and the business of medicine.

Wonderful concept. Donated a lot of blood over the years. Just got sick to my stomach with what I had to pay the hospital though I donated probably 10-15X what was given.

That's a lot! Most donors barely reach the 2-3 gallon marks over their lifetime.

Is it really donating if you're getting paid?

Wait until you hear about sperm donations. They pay you to jack off.

If I had a nickel for every time I ....

you may know - how do they count platelet donations? a pint of platelets should count more than a pint of blood.

I've been giving pretty much exclusively platelets for about the last decade and it's always at least a double and often a triple.

Pretty much. A single platelet is basically equivalent to 1 whole blood.
So a double counts as two pints, and a triple counts as three.

The hang up, is that it's not off the donated target of single/double/triple at time of donation but off the final split rate in the lab.post donations the lab pulls a sample off the collection set and runs a cell/plot count to determine concentration of platelets, then they have to sterile split the donation volume into equivalent parts based on the plt concentration in the liquid volume into a standardize medical dose.

So you may give a "double" platelet volume wise up front, however for some reason maybe your plt count was a bit lower so we only get 1 transfuseable dose and then the rest isn't enough to label as a transfuseable product, and has to be discarded.

We run back end cell counts and calibrations to set the machines and get as close as possible and we kpi our split rates, but it happens.

Same with a triple, target a triple but only get a double.

Those back end numbers are what feeds the lab counts for lifetime donations and why it isn't always and 1:1 ratio.

Thanks for the thorough explanation. A co-worker gives whole blood every 8 weeks and is up to something like 20+ gallons lifetime.

my 7 seems pretty puny. But I know the platelets are more needed than whole blood.

Thst is awesome for them. Frequency definitely helps build.

We have platelet donors who come in every 2 weeks and really rack up the gallon milestones. (Platelet eligibility is every 7-14 days, cell counts depending) we have a guy thst hit 120+ here recently.

Since i got you on the line....

Is it better to do just platelets and be able to give again in two weeks or platelets + plasma and have to wait a month?

Depends on a couple factors.

Blood type - if your AB+, platelets and plasma monthly
If Any other - just platelets, then

Donor platelet count/volume- if you are only eligible for a single platlet based on your count, do a single/plasma if you have a count that allows for double/triples, do platelet only as a double/triple.

Every time I've gone in for platelets, it's been at least a double. About half the time, a triple. And I'm A+.

Thanks for the advice.

Happy to help.

If you give at least 5x in a year you should get an invite (via email) to our annual donor banquets. If you've ever been to one in past couple years or go this year, I'm usually the emcee.

This years DFW banquet is in September so be on the lookout.

Why would you make people suffer the Rangers after doing something nice. You might as well punch them in the face after they donate
