Been thru Nixon a lot.
Back in olden times, my High School FFA Chapter was in the same district with Nixon-Smiley (Guadalupe Valley District). At the District FFA meeting there was a talent contest, and some kid from Nixon-Smiley named David Elder got up with a guitar and sang Merle Haggard's "You take me for granted.". Absolutely killed that song. Always wondered what happened to him.

Polecats.... worse than you can imagine. Them sand fleas will leave you with an itch you can't get rid of.
I've always liked Nixon. Stockdale FFA hosts a steer and heifer show there every year that we usually go to but I'm from Skidmore and the fact that Nixon has a stop light is impressive to me.
Gillett is much better than all the other towns mentioned.

We drove through Skidmore on the way up to Nixon. Parking lot around DQ was PACKED.

Las Lagunas in Floresville is very similar food. Also Angelica's in Yorktown and Rosie's in Cuero but those are both closed now. All from the same family.
Word on the street is that Rosie's is Cuero may be re-opening early next year though...

No, it is being torn down and is not open for traffic. The new bridge has only been open since this summer. I imagine it will take a while to tear down the old one due to lead paint and environmental concerns, since it is over water and daily use of the shipping channel.
In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is also delicious.
On my path to CStat for games. Suggest traveling on down US 80 to Belmont @ junction of 80 and US 90 for Goss BBQ. Road trip worthy. It is a gas station, but don't let that deter you.

I have stopped there before and it is good. all I got was a chopped bbq sandwich. no idea if it's good high end bbq.
