When you need obnoxious blat, that's how you get it done. Trombone players live for that moment when they are supposed to do that in the music. A double forte with a crescendo and it's on!

Anything in the pedal range at a loud dynamic gives us permission to unleash the beast. I can easily bury the entire orchestra. I'm playing a bunch of stuff in my band gig that demands an aggressive playing style in the basement range that has to cut through a 100-player ensemble. It's a cheap high getting all light-headed from playing like that.

It's been a while since I had to read music, but why the double 8th rests, followed by an 8th, followed by a quarter rest?

It shows where the beat is and makes the syncopation easier to read. A quarter rest could confuse the player by giving the impression of being on the beat, instead of straddling it.

Remove the upper octaves. If the players can't splatter the pedal notes, then they don't get to play.

I'd prefer to just buy a contrabass trombone, but I can't justify spending $7,000 for an entry-level horn.

I recently watched a video of a guy who lived in California and played in orchestras for film scores. Dude owned TWO contrabass trombones. Had one in F and one in Bb. Those things are fascinating. Said he had not yet needed one for a piece but had them just in case.
