"Saying that an esoteric fact is a Dennis Miller type reference is so meta"

Heard that from a 20ish year old dude on the phone at the gas station.

It made me chuckle, and gave me just a little hope for the kids these days.

I am shocked someone that age knows Dennis Miller

Talk about someone that had 15 minutes. Is he even still alive

I would give him more than 15 minutes. Maybe some people remember him for only 15 minutes. I don't want to get off on a rant here, but I remember him being a young up and coming comedian with appearances on Carson and Letterman. Then I remember him hosting Weekend Update for a few seasons. And then I remember him having a decent run on HBO. That spanned roughly 25 years

Honestly he'd be remembered a lot more favorably if it wasn't for his awkward addition to MNF. That ranks right up there with New Coke as one of the stupidest corporate gambles ever.

I wouldn't lay all of that on Miller. The NFL and MNF were going through a transition and needed a change. They took a chance on Miller thinking he could help bring a little more higher functioning audience, and it didn't.

Miller's Weekend Updates on SNL were often fantastic.

No one can beat Norm, of course, but Miller is a close second in my book.

I was surprised to hear a kid mention Dennis Miller, too. Kid would have been in diapers when Miller was on MNF. Maybe the guy was older than he looked.

But, I just thought that it was such a great use of the word "Meta". Here we are talking about an esoteric comedian from 2 decades ago that is best known for his esoteric references on MNF.

Maybe he stole that quote from his dad? Dunno.
