Man of Steel, BvS, and Zach Snyder's Justice League are all better than Superman II - IV and Superman Returns. Maybe not a fair comparison since two of those are not solo Superman movies, but those latter two are still better movies than the original Superman sequels.

I could make a movie with my iPhone sitting on my couch that is better than Superman II-IV.

I don't get the recent hate for Superman II, but III & IV fall into that category.
Superman II is not a movie that has withstood the test of time. In the summer of 1981, back to back weekends gave us Raiders of the Lost Ark and Superman II. I saw both multiple times, and they were neck-and-neck for the best that year. In 2025, I will still watch Raiders, but no interest in ever watching Superman II again after I watched it for the first time in probably 20 years, and thought that it was hot garbage. Terribly and unwatchable. It is the memory of seeing that movie roughly half a dozen times in 1981 that I don't hate, rather than the movie itself.

And Hackman walks the line between helping Supes vs helping Zod wonderfully.

And if you're from the H, you have to love:

Snyder himself seems like a nice enough guy, but it's kind of weird and ****ty that he's never made some kind of emphatic, public denouncement of these guys.

Someone should tell these guys….

I get being a passionate fan base….but faking to purchase movie tickets and purposely posting spoilers everywhere for a version of a film you don't want is pretty much the comic nerd territory of this chick….

Other than the fact that this stuff is being posted on other forums is it much different than the slaughter of Captain Marvel because people didnt like Brie Larson's politics or any other hammering done by mass grroups of bitter people who think the entertainment world is their enemy?

I don't recall people trying to organize reserving movie tickets to prevent sales and scheming to post spoilers everywhere to try and stifle sales also….

The whole fam has agreed to pile into the Family Truckster for Superman, a true rarity among superhero movies.

Reasons include:
Me: Nathan Fillion and Hawkgirl
Wife: Gideon Gemstone and the Ms Maisel
Kid1: The dog
Kid 2: to brag to her friends

We've done 2 superhero films altogether: The last one was an unmitigated success - Guardians of the Galaxy 3. The first, not so much, Wonder Woman 1984

Our family is all in but for a very different reason….

We've never actually started any sort of comic book movie universe thing from the start…we never saw any of the original DCU and our history with the MCU was well documented here….

So yeah…we're fired up just about getting started with something from the beginning in the theaters.

Yes I've seen the OG Superman (Reeves) and Batman films as well as the Christopher Nolan Batman but nothing else from DC since the dark knight rises so I'm looking forward to this.

my wife has the most bizarre Marvel in-theater track record of all time. She's seen:

Iron Man 2
Ant-Man
Ant-Man and the Wasp
Spiderman: No Way Home
GOTG 3

in the theater. That's it.

That's…quite a selection.

Though I will say whether it's considered DCU or its own weird little universe, The Batman is well worth the watch (and I say that as a long time Batman comic reader).

I thought the Batman was just a good movie. Like without the "comic book" caveat.

Does unaided awareness mean you just have ESP but only limited to when a movie is coming out?

I'm hearing talk that the supposed marketing cost for Superman is $200 million….which is insane but considering how much they are actually doing y'all think that number is believable? Do we know approximately what the budget for this thing was?

Totally agree. More the note that I appreciated it even more as a comic reader, was the most complete and true to history interpretation of Batman we've seen.

This is some kind of bootleg audio recording, but it's the new version of the Williams theme in full effect, from the movie itself, and kicks in about 25 seconds through. If this is the energy Gunn is bringing, yeah, this movie's gonna cross a billion...

This is the soundtrack from the part where he's putting on his boots from that first image. All in slo-mo, 3 minute long scene.

From what I've heard, $200M is accurate. The budget for the movie itself is reportedly around $225M, which would traditionally mean roughly another $150M on top of that for marketing. But this movie HAS to succeed. Warner Bros has too much riding on it. And my guess is the extra $50M toward marketing is to help ensure its success. It also probably/hopefully shows how confident Warner Bros is in what Gunn has done.

What profit margin is considered successful for something like this?

Someone posted it earlier in the thread. I think it was like $675/$700M. Around there.

if the budgets are roughly what you posted above ($225 film $200 marketing) that's a total production budget of $425 million…assuming there's NOT a 25% tax discount coming from the film budget if they filmed in the UK then doesn't that mean they need to earn roughly $850 million worldwide to roughly break even?

If they get that 25% discount on the film budget then it appears the break even worldwide would be $738 million.

Thoughts?

I've never completely understood how all that works. All I know that the $675M/$700M number was officially reported.

It's $700M. Here's the article…

jokershady
How long do you want to ignore this user?
What I've always heard is this:

Generally the US Box office gives back to the production company a little over 50% of the tickets sold. The remaining worldwide box office gives a little less than 50% and the amount also depends on the country. Therefore just as a general consensus just take 50% of the total worldwide Bix office and assume that's the break even.

That article was written on June 2nd and I don't think the marketing $$$ had been made known at that point so also safe to say the number from that article should go up.

Needless to say it's true what you and others are saying…they need this to be a banger! Hell they might be thinking spend a butt load of money on this to create hype around the DCU and if they just break even then that's a win because it should mean $$$$$$ down the road with other films….

What will also be interesting (and unpredictable) is how this will fair internationally…cause even if this only does 120 million domestic but the world wide is over 2x that then that's still a pretty dang good start….
YouBet
How long do you want to ignore this user?
So, $500M is break even but $700M is the subjective barometer of success.
