I really enjoyed all of the Hanibal books. Hanibal Rising gives a good insight on how he became who he is. Seeing your reading history, and knowing you enjoyed Silence, you should read the other books.

I finished the Vicomte de Bragelonne, the third book in the Three Musketeers trilogy. It's split up across three parts in Audible, each about 25 hours of audio, so this was quite an undertaking.

I think I'm a little disappointed in the direction it went. Needed a lot more musketeering, and there isn't a single scene where all 4 heroes are in the same place. Sad endings all around as well. I'm gonna have to go listen to the first book to remember the good times.

Anyway that's my review of a 175 year old book.

Any of you read The Ministry of Time? A coworker recommended it and I'm on the fence based off the description.
“There is no red.
There is no blue.
There is the state.
And there is you.”

“As government expands, Liberty contracts” - R. Reagan

A Time of Courage(Of Blood and Bone Book 3) by John Gwynne. I enjoyed this sequel trilogy, though it was not as good as The Faithful and the Fallen, which I would highly recommend as a great fantasy series.

Metamorphosis by Kafka.

Really short novella. Can be read in an evening or two. Loved it. Puts you inside the mind of somebody fighting depression. Fantastic story that I will be thinking about for a long time.

Ignore the "Kafka-esque" cliche. This isn't hard to understand.

Today I finished Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and started Unlocked by John Scalzi, which is part of the Haden's Syndrome series.

Finished The Stand today after being inspired by the earlier discussion on this thread. I enjoyed the story overall but I thought the way the conflict with the main antagonist ended was a bit anticlimactic.

Finished the first sun eater on audible. Intrigue but not totally sold. Started the second. Thinking I'll keep it on audible for driving. The author is vERY verbose! Think I would end up skimming a lot reading it. But the reader is very good and I like him.

The Hunt for Red October

Figured I'd start my Clancey rabbit hole. I've read Patriot Games and Rainbow Six years and years ago and enjoyed them a lot but decided I should just start at the beginning. Or near enough.

I know Red October was written ages ago and Clancey was not the powerhouse he would become yet, but I was surprised at the number of editing mistakes and some of the misues of terminology. Clip instead of magazine, no capitalization of President (When used as a noun) nor Marine Corps (Always has me punching air) and just the number of typos.

Nit picking really and I don't recall R6 having that issue so figure over time and experience and better editing it was all fixed.

Great read though. On to the next Jack Ryan adventure!

Finished The Lion Tracker's Guide To Life. Very quick read. A few good quotes but wouldn't reread.

When his books were first published, my boss got me started on The Hunt for Red October, and I was hooked, at least through The Teeth of the Tiger. I did start rereading them in 2021 and got through Debt of Honor, then read Rainbow 6 because it was so good. I didn't finish the reread, but it was good to revisit the world of Jack Ryan.
If you haven't read Red Storm Rising, it's worth the time.

Finished Red Dragon by Thomas Harris. Wish I would have read this one before Silence of the Lambs. Either way, great book, though I liked SotL better. Not sure how I felt about how he laid out the ending.

Overall, would recommend.

I didn't see this problem in my hard cover, so perhaps this is only in later editions?

I think the end of the movie Red Dragon was better executed than the book.

Still shocked this one was not made into a movie

It would need to be a mini-series like Band of Brothers.

Wasn't Red Storm Rising the first one? Wonder if it holds up with all the tech changes.

Just finished The Firm by John Grisham.

Thought it was just okay. I remember liking the movie.

I think The Firm is one I've heard people use as an example of "sometimes the movie is better than the book."

I will say that while the book had a few problems, it did have plenty of scenes that included lots of photocopying so that was good.

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins. Interesting mystery/thriller, though more predictable than I would have liked.

The thing to keep in mind is that even a mediocre Grisham book in those days is a good read. I don't know much about his later work.

My latest read is Unlocked: An Oral History of Haden's Disease, by John Scalzi. Next up is the last book of the B. N. Rundel series The Plainsman Western Series. I think after that, I'll take on the second Sun Eater book.

Call of the Wild. 3.5 hours on audible. Wasn't a big fan tbh but I think I'm at that point in life where I need all my dog stories to be happy.

I also rolled my eyes a little as Buck became the ultimate badass dog, hauling 1000 lbs and killing a bear for fun. Come on.

Dog stories from the past rock! Did a reread of where the red fern grows a few months ago because it came up in conversation. Held up reasonably well from 40 odd years ago.

If you liked that as an adult you might try Summer of Monkeys. It's hilarious.
