The Lost World should be next. I enjoyed it more than JP, honestly.

That's a big endorsement considering how much I enjoyed JP. Thanks for making my decision for me!

Just finished a Canticle for Leibowitz. I liked it but I'm also not sure what to think of it.

Only a handful of pages into Lost World, but have to appreciate how casually he brought Ian Malcom back from the dead.

Finished: The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde

Next: The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket - Edgar Allan Poe
CNN is an enemy of the state and should be treated as such.

Nice choices.

Throw in some HP Lovecraft and we'd have a regular book club on our hands!

If there are any music geeks like me and a fan of the 90's Seattle scene, Mark Lanegan's book (Sing Backwards and Weep) is a must read. A tremendously insightful and haunting memoir of a lost soul that had a lot to give. On of the few music autobiographies that truly grip and stays with you.

I love the movie…the book blew the movie out of the water

Had no idea it was so good until seeing it mentioned several times here. Sounds like a must read.

First time? It is one of those books you wish you could read for the first time again!

Have started A Boys Life (Robert McCammon) and Martyr (Kaveh Albar).
Both have been introduced as 5 star must reads. Good start so far.

I can't find whoever recommended "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow" but I'm almost done with it and it is an excellent book. Thank you for the recommendation!

Lord of the World by Robert Hugh Benson. Benson was a Catholic priest and the novel is about the coming of the Anti-Christ and the world's end from a Catholic perspective. It was written in 1907, but has proved extremely prophetic. The last three popes have all recommended reading it.

I started this. Got about 40% into it. I liked it, but it also depressed the **** out of me. I had to stop reading it a while back. I'll pick it back up at some point but I need to be in the right frame of mind when I do.

I am nearly finished with Brandon Sandersons Isles of the Emberdark. I wasn't a huge fan of sticking Sixth of the Dusk chapters as flashbacks during the first part of the book but when the ride really gets going wow. This might be my second favorite of the secret projects after Tress. The villain in this is really fun and layered. Brilliant but almost too much so with his arrogance. It also teases a pretty dark future of the cosmere that we got hints at in the secret projects

The Shadow of What Was Lost (The Licanius Trilogy #1) - James Islington

Started this about 9 months ago. Got about 40% into it and put it down. It just didn't grab me. However, I picked it back up a couple of weeks ago and finished it today. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for it first time I around but I enjoyed it after I picked it back up. I'm going to finish Watchers since I started that on a flight and then jump into book 2 of Licanius.

Edit: like most fantasy fans I love a good map, but the one for this series is trash. Half the places mentioned in this book are not depicted on the map. If you are going to mention a place multiple times and it's a major plot point then put it on the damn map.

Furthermore, when they were in that abandoned city the directional descriptions in the text didn't line up with the map. Need some editor help here.

I'll finish Red Rising today and I would give it a B+ or A- but I'm having a hard time really focusing on it. I'm not sure if it's the number of characters or how the author writes but it's been difficult. Anyone else experience this?

I finished The Lion of Tiberias by Robert E. Howard and 1984 by George Orwell. Currently reading book 3 of the Plainsman Western Series by B. N. Rundell.

Finished The Red Badge of Courage yesterday.

Thought it was fine. Felt my mind wandering sometimes. The dialogue with all the apostrophes required some concentration.

Overall it was solid. Never been in combat (don't think the author ever was either) but I though the emotions of the character felt very relatable.

I had the same experience, but book 2 does get better. I'm about 2/3 of the way through book 2 and have really enjoyed it.

I'm 3 books shy of finishing the Saxon Chronicles (i.e. The Last Kingdom series) by Bernard Cornwell. Absolutely love them. So, I'm curious if anyone has read his series centered around Richard Sharpe set in the Napoleonic Wars, and if so are they as good as the Saxon Chronicles.

Haven't read his Sharpe books, but just wanted to say I loved the Saxon Stories too. Props to you, because I know they're a big undertaking.

Well, if I start them I'll have to report back here. And I typically fly through the Saxon books. He makes them so easy to enjoy.

I have read every Bernard Cornwell book; don't stop with Saxon.

Richard Sharpe is a badass mofo in the British ranks.

The holy grail / Vagabond Series is awesome

The King Arthur series is one of my favorites.

I even read his one offs; and the only one that wasn't great was the one about Stonehenge - still good, but not awesome IMO
