Will have extra work to do for me to get over my annoyance of all things Mark Ruffalo, but Mare of Easttown was absolutely an incredible show.

I thought I was the only one who disliked Ruffalo. I can't stand that guy.

I despise Mark Ruffalo, but think I will have to break down and watch this one.

Last movie I saw of his was 13 Going on 30. So I've been doing pretty good to avoid him.

That takes out the Avengers flicks and a swath of other Marvel movies.

I'd probably have traded 13 Going on 30 for one of those. Thor Ragnarok was pretty fun.

Between the teaser trailer in the OP and the full trailer below, these have to be two of the best TV trailers I've seen in years. Holy hell. Also, bring on September 7th... the premiere of Task, opening Sunday for the NFL, and the kickoff of Notre Dame week....

Damn it, I was in until I saw Ruffalo was in it. Can't stand that guy. He ruined Hulk, I take that personally.

The Ruffalo hate is so over the top. I totally get that he's a whiny, outspoken lib or whatever, but he's also a consistently great actor who never brings any of that real-life energy to his roles. Dude always delivers, and looks incredible in this.
aggiechick

No. He's also a bad actor in my opinion. He's a mumbler who shuffles through scenes and I can't stand any movie he is in. (And he's a whiny Beta of a man).

This is why people get annoyed with you. I don't like his acting style. His voice bothers meet. His character portrayals aren't always to my liking. If you liking his acting that's totally fine.

If you genuinely don't like his acting style, great. You can state your opinion, I can state mine. That's how message boards work. But it's obvious that the vast majority of the negativity directed at him has to do with his politics, his "beta" nature, etc - not his acting - and I just find it funny that people let themselves get so riled up over that stuff, considering he's a four-time Oscar nominee, and is consistently good in consistently good material (which, again, is simply my opinion, as I apparently have to clarify that now).

Also, just FYI, saying I "annoy" people will never be something that gets to me, considering 95% of the those I annoy I feel the exact same way about them.

I also refuse to watch anything with Jane Fonda in it. So at least I'm consistent.

My husband was sucked in. I had been trying to get him to watch Mare of Easttown for years and he had no interest. After episode one of Task last night, I brought up MoE again, and now he's all in on watching it. I hope Task winds up being even half as good as MoE.

I've seen Tom Pelphrey in a couple of shows now: Ozark and Outer Range. I thought he was good in those shows, but nothing special. But just so far in ep 1 of Task I thought he was fantastic. Trying to put aside my dislike of Mark Ruffalo's personal issues and focus only on his acting. Prior to this show, I would begrudgingly admit he was a good actor. But I thought his performance in this episode was just meh. Far overshadowed by Pelphrey.

I was also getting some similar vibes, I think both shows based in PA. I thought the first episode was great. They did a decent job with trying to start laying out the framework for Ruffalo's character but the amount they laid out for Pelphrey's character was way more intensive.

Only real gripe about the first episode is the plot. Would they call in the FBI to investigate drug dealers being mugged, especially in an economically challenged area? They were already called in before the job at the last house so that's not why they are there. Maybe I missed something, I was pretty tired when I started watching.

The FBI lady that told Ruffalo he was needed back in the field mentioned the task force needed to look into the trap house hits to prevent a turf war between gangs hence the issue being elevated to the FBI.

Couple of things for me.
Definitely felt like they could have cut at least 15 minutes and lost nothing. Felt like it dragged a bit.
TP was amazing. That character is so rich and real.
Martha Plimpton from Parenthood was the FBI boss, which was awesome.
I thought MR was the weak link for two reasons. First, they had him so beaten down he barely seemed capable of anything they were asking him to do, just seemed over the top. But more for me, he was a priest for 8 years and had no clue seemingly how to talk to anyone? I get they were selling all the trauma, but that's literally what they do all day every day. Would have been far more interesting to me if they set up that facade with the pain underneath,
But the last five minutes was borderline breathtaking, what they have set up now has the potential to be crazy good. Like Gone Baby Gone (one of the most underrated movies this century) with the HBO treatment. All that character set up for TP made total sense at the end.

Looking forward to the task force taking TP's crew down.

TP is a midnight robber, his crew kills, he steals his niece's pot, smokes it in her room, manhandles her boyfriend, kicks her out of her Dad's house, and abducts his slain victim's kid - all while poignantly pining for someone to share that life with.

Lizzie (the state trooper) being on point at the crime scene was a funny touch after setting her up as being worthless.

I couldn't figure out who the guy on the task force was, I knew I recognized him but couldn't place his face. Went on IMDB and confirmed he plays Ser Criston Cole in House of the Dragon. Just thought I'd drop that info here if it was driving anyone else crazy.

Inglesby seems to really love writing crime dramas in DelCo with a heap of Catholic priests mixed in.

Almost feels like a second season to Mare of Eastown. Hopefully the quality remains top notch.

Very good start. I thought Ruffalo seemed to hit his stride late in the episode. I'm guessing the task force makes him come out of his shell. The bad guys are great. The dialogue is really well written and it's unique. Shades of The Sopranos where there is humor everywhere despite it being a dark show.
Is this in the East-town universe?

Almost feels like a second season to Mare of Eastown. Hopefully the quality remains top notch.

If anyone is interested in listening, Inglesby appears on the most recent Ryen Russillo podcast and they chat about the show, there's no spoilers unless you didn't watch the pilot episode. Evidently the inspiration for Ruffalo being a former Catholic priest is an uncle of his that was a priest and left so he could get married. They touch on Mare as well but just briefly. I didn't realize he also wrote Into the Furnace, which I had rewatched earlier this year, but it totally fits with the setting and the overall feeling of the show. If you like Task or Mare of Eastown it's worth a watch. It stars Christian Bale, Casey Affleck, Woody Harrelson, and Zoe Saldana with brief appearances by Willem Dafoe, Forest Whitaker, Sam Sheppard and Boyd Holbrook.
