This movie doesn't deserve an official thread. So consider this a warning instead.

Its garbage. I'd say hot garbage even but that would be disrespecting other hot garbage out there. And I'm pretty sure some random Joe with AI could have made a better movie than this.

I really don't understand how they cancel decent shows yet still spend money on crap like this.

Yet ANOTHER remake (or re-imagining or whatever). Hollywood is beyond lazy.

The Tom Cruise version is a guilty pleasure of mine.

Right? That one really didn't need to be remade - it was pretty good!

The ending though with his son being alive was bush league.

Disagree. I think we should Greenlight every tom cruise movie for a remake starring Ice Cube.

The 1953 version didn't need to be remade.

I liked lots of Spielberg's take on the story ... but hated both the kids and the God-awful ending with the ex-wife and family apparently having a dinner party amid all this alien destruction.

I think Spielberg's was far more ominous and disturbing… right before you find out the aliens are apparently Red Sox fans.

It's a difference between 1953 and 2005. The original movie was certainly much less of a graphic movie, although I have to think audiences back then were floored when the Martian death ray turned those three dudes to ash - less than a decade past the first use of the A-bombs. Spielberg was more graphic with the Martians vaporizing flesh but leaving clothing, or inhaling a person and then you see it spit out the blood.

I wouldn't mind seeing a version hold true to the book. Be set in the late 1800s in England.

Biggest thing that bugs me about both versions.....all that advanced technology and higher intelligence.....and didn't know about or prevent exposure to germs?

Spielberg's was very much a post-9/11 meditation. The ash covering people and the buildings collapsing and on fire with the idea of the aliens hiding their machines among us was very prescient to the moment.

There's a BBC version that is more true to the era of the book. I appreciate what Wells was going for, but it makes less sense as we understand microbes today. I always took it to mean their microbial life is so vastly different from ours that they made assumptions which didn't pan out.

Right.....Wells could only go off what they had at that time....or what he envisioned. I doubt that included clean rooms and bio suits.

It's actually pretty remarkable the vision he had with this story in the late 1800s.

The kids. Do the same movie without the stupid kids and its revered. Every motivation in the movie came from needing to bail the kids out of them being annoying or stupid.

Do you have kids? Because that's exactly what having kids is like.

Now do Signs. That must have been a Hold My Beer moment for whatever alien made the decision to come to Earth.

H20 kills us, but....Hey! let's visit this world where water is 70% of the planet's surface and about 60% of the highest life forms mass. It will probably be fine!

Still like the movie though.

I've leaned towards this theory over the years. Basically they are demons, and it isn't just water, its Holy Water. Interesting eitherway.

I believe I saw in a review that this movie was made quite a while ago but just getting a release.
