Just curious, but why so many successful dudes, and scarcely any women?
Given that most of those are country artists, I'm aware of a school of thought that country pivoted away from women hard in the 2000s. Blame it on the (Dixie) Chicks, or the big 80s and 90s names getting older, but country's only had two and half tentpole ladies (in my opinion) since Shania's heyday.
Yes, I thought that became official when Taylor Swift officially rebranded herself as Pop instead of Country. At that time, pop music was very similar to country music with the distinct difference being that pop was female vocals and country was male.
Since then, there has been a lot of good traditional country artists emerge, thanks to guys like Chris Stapleton and Sturgill Simpson. And recently, 90s country is re-emerging thanks to guys like Zach Top.
As far as Aggie singers and bands..... let's be honest, Texas A&M doesn't generally attract the top 10% kid who also happens to be a creative musical genius. It seems like most of our musicians seem to be pretty simple three-chord story tellers. I don't see the next Nirvana coming from College Station. (I'm watching you, UNT - Denton.)
But you know what? Doesn't matter. I can have a great time listening to 3 or 4 musicians hammering out George Strait and AC/DC covers while throwing in an original or two. And Sneaky Pete at the Flying Tomato was an inspiration to anyone who wanted to pick a little guitar and sing Jimmy Buffet covers.
I'm still looking for anyone who knew the underground rapper "Will D" back in the mid 90s. I met him a few times, and I heard that he had several tapes circulating. I never heard one. sad face.
