I have seen no mention of Barefoot in the Park.

Admittedly, it also stars Jane Fonda, whom I loathe, but before she went insane she was a gifted comic actress.

Redford created the role on Broadway in Neil Simon's play and then was cast in the film. The movie is very funny, and he is terrific as the straight man to his scatterbrained wife (Fonda).

I hardly ever see it appear on TV any more, but it has a great supporting cast, a number of running jokes, and always makes me laugh.

As a kid, Sneakers was about as good as it gets for me. Was just quoting that movie last week.

Last year, I stayed up late one night watching Brubaker and enjoyed it.

Also always loved The Last Castle.

It's definitely not one of his top movies, but, as romance meets courtroom drama goes, I really liked Legal Eagles.

I love the reactions in the faces… the ball boy, teammates, coaches, young boys in the crowd. The weight of the moment!! Any sports fan has felt it.

I think The Natural is one of the best movies ever for me to look at and listen to. The use of light and shadows to enhance scenes is awesome to watch. Even more enjoyable to me, as a baseball fan, are the sounds...spikes on concrete, the crack of the bat, balls ricocheting off empty seats during batting practice are all music to my ears. Even better still is the radio announcer who sounds like an actual play by play man. Plus the sound of the announcer changes. When the camera is in the press box, he sounds like he's in the room and when the camera is outside the press box, the sound is akin to listening on the radio. Perfection.

I am going to be the guy that says it.

Redford was in a ton of great movies with memorable characters, but I thought his acting was pretty boring. Guys like McQueen and Newman were way better actors, IMO. I love almost every movie I have seen him in, but it isn't because of his acting. It is because the stories were really good.

I think of Redford as kind of like John Wayne - they were both great actors in a very narrow range, i.e., playing variations of themselves. He didn't have, or at least didn't choose roles that showed off, great versatility. That being said, he was definitely one of the great movie stars of his era.

I'm a huge Redford fan and I agree that he was not an actor in the class of Hoffman, Newman or Nicholson. He settled into a certain type of character and never strayed from it. His appeal was in the roles and stories he chose.

His only Academy award nomination for acting was for The Sting and an argument can be made that Newman was the better of the two. I think he was nominated because of his body of work that year: Jeremiah Johnson, The Sting and The Way We Were.

I don't think this is a stretch at all. He was a fine actor and elevated every movie he was in, and that's plenty noteworthy.

Agreed. I consider him a movie star more than an actor if that makes sense. He picked vehicles that were great stories and he elevated them just by being in them. I think people would not have paid attention to some of those movies without him being in them.

He brought his personality and presence to his films which was huge.

I was trying to avoid using the term "one dimensional". ""Narrow range" is probably better. I will give him credit that he was a good judge of what characters to play. I could not see him as a Dirty Harry type, a gangster (ok, he was a con artist in the Sting) or an action hero.

I can't decide which of his movies is my favorite. The Sting, The Natural, Jeremiah Johnson, Out of Africa, maybe a couple of others

I haven't seen all of his movies, especially the 1980s stuff, but I would say his most underrated role was as Big Halsey. Kind of an odd movie, but I thought his character was a stretch for him and he did well.

My least favorite roles were Electric Horseman (didn't find him believable as a rodeo star) and The Way We Were (probably because I find Babs to be a turnoff.)

Not planned but the kids picked the latest Charlotte's Web to watch last night. The one with a young Dakata Fanning. Guess who was Ike the horse? Mr. Redford.
Didn't realize it but got a random memorial viewing.

One of my favorite stories about Redford is a movie he didn't star in. He apparently desperately wanted to play the lead in The Graduate but was told by the Director,
