Coming out Nov 7th. Hadn't heard or seen anything about this until recently. Very intrigued by Crowe playing Göring.

Quote:

Nuremberg is a 2025 American historical drama film written, co-produced, and directed by James Vanderbilt. It is based on the 2013 book The Nazi and the Psychiatrist by Jack El-Hai. The film follows psychiatrist Douglas Kelley (Rami Malek), who is challenged with determining if Hermann Göring (Russell Crowe) is fit to stand at the Nuremberg trials. It also stars Leo Woodall, John Slattery, Mark O'Brien, Colin Hanks, Wrenn Schmidt, Lydia Peckham, Richard E. Grant, and Michael Shannon in supporting roles.

I knew Roger Sterling served in WW II, but I didn't realize what a key role he had.

I just hope they don't make it political

Goering was an arrogant idiot that happened to weasel his way into Hitler's inner circle. Almost everyone despised him, even Hitler towards the end. Once captured he tried to ingratiate himself with the allies and when he realized that wouldn't work he killed himself. That's how he should be portrayed, and not as some Hannibal Lecter archetype. We will see.

He was certainly not an idiot. He was intelligent and manipulative. From what I saw in the trailer, Crowe's depiction looks fairly spot on.

This is the movie that made Russell Crowe realize he needed to lose a bunch of weight. He talked about it on Rogan about a year ago.

I imagine I'll watch this because I have much interest in WWII, but the acting doesn't look very good.

Crowe's accent: not good.

Slattery: There's a shallow and ironic and cynical part of him that comes through despite himself. It made him a great Roger Sterling.

We'll see.

Judgment at Nuremberg was a great movie.

Yes. Montgomery Clift's short scene was powerful.

OK… If your idea of an idiot is a mentally challenged dunce, then no he was not.

So idiot may not be the right word.

As the commander of the Luftwaffe, he was an incompetent lazy drug addict who lacked vision. He was a poor strategist who discarded and ignored the crucial research and work that his first Chief of Staff Walther Wever accomplished when it came to developing a heavy bomber program. The Luftwaffe consistently failed to deliver upon his uninformed promises and he was probably the person (besides Hitler himself, thankfully) most responsible for the ultimate Nazi defeat and Germany's utter destruction.

I'm not sure that's better than saying he was an idiot though.

Good at manipulating people, (thankfully) not great at leading people.

The trailer looks like it was cut and edited by some small budget studio.

Yeah, not an ideal military commander over the Luftwaffe. Not to get into the weeds too much on that, but no amount of sensible strategy and command would save the Germans after biting off more than they could chew on multiple fronts.

Anyway, an "idiot" doesn't fly planes in WWI achieving ace status, and then have a meteoric political career afterward. I think the book and Crowe's depiction of him are not far-fetched, as he was from all accounts a pretty shrewd, calculating, intelligent person.

he was one of the best German fighter pilots and squadron leaders during World War One

and led the Luftwaffe to complete air domination in 1940. as well as becoming the second highest ranking member of the Nazi Party and second most powerful man in Europe.

I would hardly say he was an "idiot"

You can be talented at one thing and a complete idiot at something else.

Goering was an absolute idiot at many things, and anyone who ever subscribed to Nazi ideology is/was an idiot on at least that count alone.
Thanks and gig'em

Well by that logic we are all complete idiots.

I just don't think it is accurate to call high-performing people idiots. Of course anyone who did or does agree with Nazism was/is misguided, but that doesn't make them an idiot. If you sat down and had conversations with men like Göring, Goebbels, or Speer, you wouldn't leave admiring their worldview, but I doubt the term "idiot" would come to mind.

Annnnnyway, looks like a cool movie.

He also was the reason our airmen were kept in better conditions in Luftwaffe run POW camps as he wanted to make sure his downed pilots were treated well. He obviously was charming as his guards during the trials smuggled him many things including the cyanide pill for his suicide. Yes, he was a power hungry narcissist but as said about, he was no where near an idiot.

I saw this today. I liked it a lot. While it is not Judgment at Nuremberg, I feel like this version of the story has a chance to become a classic in its own right. The acting drove this thing, particularly between Crowe and Malik. The relationship forged between Goering and Dr. Kelley was well portrayed, first in its feeling out then to its friendship and finally through betrayal and dissolution. From the reading I have done and several Mark Felton videos on the subject, the filmmakers did a good job with the history of the Nuremberg Trials.

Another thing I picked up on that meshed with a Felton video is that upon capture, Nazis were stripped of all medals, their baton, and other regalia. When we first see Goering, he is the fully adorned Reichsmarschall. Once he reaches the prison, you see the holes in his jacket where the medals, etc, had been. Small detail that I appreciated.

This movie won't be for everyone. But it really is not so much a WWII movie as it is a legal drama. I was not once bored in a movie that featured no action, no sex, no conflict among its characters for the most part.

Edit to add - there is some actual footage shown of concentration camp liberations. I have seen much of it, but not all of it. As one might expect, this was brutal to watch.
