Edge of Tomorrow and Oblivion both I went with pretty low expectations, expecting a fairly forgettable popcorn flick. Both exceeded my expectations by a lot. Really cool movies.

He's earned my respect. Don't love everything he's made, but he always give his roles 110%. He's one I hate to see aging, because he's one of a kind.

Marvel had been on a roll but now a lesser known group is getting a movie that consists of a talking raccoon and grunting tree. I thought this was going to be where marvel jumped the shark and went into the movie thinking it was going to be a dud.

Came here to post this. The marketing was so bad for this movie. I had zero interest in seeing it. Classic case of not judging a book by its cover.
They paid for their wars with your tax dollars and also with your untaxed dollars. Inflation is theft.
GotG looked stupid in the trailers. Got bored one afternoon and watched on D+ and was drawn in immediately after the intro.
The first Sonic and Angry Birds movies. Sat down in the theater with a sense of dread (or maybe I was looking forward to the nap opportunity)...but hey, you do it for your kids. But I was reasonably entertained.
Princess Bride. I was 13 and my dad was dragging us to the theater in the fall of 1987 to see this gay looking princess movie. Now I can't even count how many times I've seen it or recited lines from it.
In terms of a film I thought I'd hate but was proven wrong I'd go with Babylon. Something about the idea in conjunction with the marketing just made me think I was going to hate it, and I did not. I actually really enjoyed it.

When the reviews started rolling out I decided to go check it out opening weekend and it wasn't just a b-level action movie, it's the b-level action franchise of the 21st century. It's not just a movie about a guy whose dog is killed, and he kills everyone, it's also Harry Potter for adults. The whole secret world aspect of the franchise is what makes it genius and takes it to the next level.
The other one that comes to mind is Coco. I didn't think it would be anything other than your standard Pixar film but it turned out to be way more to me. I saw it not too long after my daughter was born and it wrecked me, and made me love it. How it approaches family, fatherhood, and death was so surprising to me and it just worked on me at every level. It's my favorite Pixar movie, period.
A film I thought I'd love but was proven wrong was The Counselor. A film directed by Ridley Scott, written by Cormac McCarthy, starring Michael Fassbender, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem, and Brad Pitt...and it's terrible.

In 2001 we didn't have kids, so we went to the movies all the time. That was when good movies (i.e. 90s and a little after) were still very common and mostly marketed directly at my demographic. The weekend consisted of a long visit to Blockbuster one day and the movies on the other day. I don't remember what motivated me to see an animated kids' movie, but when I walked out I was floored. But come on...Eddie Murphy, Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, my first computer animated movie, a dragon, a song by Joan Jett with a cuss word (gasp!) in it, the wrestling scene..... "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves" this was not. It remains my favorite animated movie to this day.

Rocky. My date (now wife) dragged me to see a stupid movie about a boxer. Now, I watch asny of the original or sequels whenever I get a chance.

Went to see this on Christmas Eve as a gift from the elves for our 3 boys…did it just cause we figured the experience of going to the movies on Christmas Eve and sneaking in the kids favorite treats would be fun enough for them regardless of how the movie was….
Turned out to be the best animated movies of the year and one of the best animated films I'd ever seen.

Hamilton. Based on reporting I thought it was going to be some woke musical. I was wrong it was probably the best thing I'd seen in years.

From the trailer, i thought it looked dumb. A buddy dragged me to it and it turned out to be a pretty great movie. Plus it has Michelle Monaghan which never hurts.

Rewind the clock all the way back to the summer of 2007. Nolan has given us Batman Begins. The Dark Knight has been announced, and Warner drops the iconic "Why so serious?" teaser. We're all enthralled with the grittiest Gotham to date and a new take on superhero movies.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the cultural world, Tobey McGuire's Spiderman had finished its three-film arc, and X-Men was rolling along with Hugh Jackman, both in their campy superhero style. Superman Returns had fallen flat. And Michael Bay went full Bay and unleashed the bright and bombastic live-action Transformers on America.
It airs with a teaser trailer for...Iron Man?
Iron Man? Really? Jeez, these guys must be desperate to get on the comic book train, right? Who even knows about Iron Man in 2007? The teaser is awesome, and the use of Black Sabbath is inspired, so we're curious. But ugh, Robert Downey Jr? I mean, I liked Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, sure, but as a superhero? And it's directed by the guy from Swingers?
I watched that movie 100% skeptical and walked out 100% loving it.

+1. Saw the theater version and loved it, got the soundtrack, etc., but the previews and gushing cast interviews for the movie made me not want to watch it. Thought it was going to be "Woke-ed".
Watched the movie with my daughter and it was fantastic.

Moana 1 is a great movie, I also love the Live Action beauty And the Beast - which did the Endgame end credits before Endgame did, and especially Tangled. I'd take all the Flynn Rider spinoffs I can get.

I thought the live action Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast were good. I barely remember Aladdin but think it was pretty good as well. But there was a number of years between 2009 and 2016 or so where every animated Disney movie was must see, due to my youngest being the right age for those movies. From The Princess and the Frog and Tangled through to Moana and Coco, those were among my most joyous years of going to the movies with my little girl. She's not so little anymore at just about 20 ... but we have a grandson from our oldest with a granddaughter due in April, so the Good Lord willing, maybe we'll get to spoil those kids with not only Disney movies but also a trip to Disney World.
