Frontman for The Mavericks. One of my and my wife's favorite bands. Seen them a lot around the state. Pic from a New Year's Eve concert at Gruene Hall a couple of years ago.

I literally just copied an article copied to create a post about this. This happened so fast. One of my all-time favorite artists. Unbelievable voice and talent.

I'm sure we were at that show. We tried to see them every chance we got.

Dang, they were one of the first vinyls I bought when I got my record player.

I loved listening to them as a kid, such a unique sound and really hits the nostalgia for me when I put them on.

He was so damn talented.
One of those groups I always said "ah, I'll see them next time they come through town" and never got around to.

Damn. Vaya con Dios, Ral.

Just a great singer with a beautiful voice that crossed genres. Loved the Mavericks back in the day.

Glad I finally got to see them a few months back. One of my all time favorites. When I played in bands I did a couple of their songs, not approaching his level of singing of course. And finally, he and my older brother could have been separated at birth so he's always felt familiar to me. RIP.

Pretty sure he could have been a fine opera singer if he wanted to. Powerful, beautiful voice and just such a fun entertainer.

This clip is not typical of their shows as they are 99% high energy and just flat out fun, but this really highlights his vocal abilities and is a beautiful version of one of their hits.

We had tickets to see them at the ACL studio in Austin this coming New Year's Eve, but that was canceled a couple of months ago.

Here's a full song video I did at the Gruene Hall concert. My wife wanted to be close to the stage so we got there early, and were close. A lot of fun. Shows the energy you're talking about bam02.

He died just a couple of days after the two-night tribute to him at The Ryman. Sad.

Here's a nice obit from Saving Country Music:

My favorite band. Have a signed Gruene Hall NYE poster framed in my office. Been following them for a long time and his health journey for the last year and a half.

Watching the countless clips from last week's Ryman shows one thing is clear, he's not easy to replace. I don't know what I think about the Mavericks continuing. I would love for them to, but hard to fill Maestro's shoes.

Here's another amazing clip ... just Malo, his guitar and voice singing the Cuban classic "Siboney."

Haunting and beautiful.

As an aside, the beautiful winery Siboney Cellars, just outside of Johnson City, is named after that song. The winery founder's great uncle was the composer. Worth a stop in if you are ever in the area.

I'm glad I made a point of seeing them a couple years ago in Houston. Had been a fan since the 90s, and finally got to see them live. Great show with a huge band. Coincidentally met some of his family because of where we were sitting, and they were really nice.

What a gut punch this morning to learn the news that Raul had passed. I attended the tribute show last Friday at the Ryman and several performers' comments implied that his condition was pretty dire (he had been rushed to the ER on Thursday night.) Still, folks were optimistic but unfortunately for all of us, cancer is rarely defeated.

RIP El Maestro, and thank you for everything you left behind for us.

Man, I never knew his name, but what a great voice. Always thought he was part Roy Orbison and part Dwight Yoakam. Gotta go back and relisten to some of those great songs (and videos you guys have provided).

Orbison and Yaokam is a good description, but with that Latin flair. The whole band seemed to truly love every second that they performed.

Colon cancer. Get checked, folks, if you are over 45 or younger than that if you have a family history. He was diagnosed at 58 and passed at 60. Just lost a long-time friend and co-worker to it 2 weeks ago, diagnosed at 56 and died at 58. Another one 2 years ago at 42.

He was amazing. Guys like him don't come out of Nashville anymore. It's a crying shame that he and the Mavericks were never bigger than the my were.

100%.

I love how they reinvented their sound, though, after their early success. The original stuff was fantastic but it limited their expression as musicians, in my uneducated opinion.

My parents absolutely love these guys.. my mom has many pictures of her singing and dancing the night away next to Raul.. my parents have been on a lot of those music cruises that mavericks played on and they always had late night impromptu jams with the guests joining in.

Got a soft spot in my heart for them, especially those 90s tunes.

Get a kleenex..

i have a funny story about him. i was at gruene hall early on a friday afternoon in late august, probably about 1 in the afternoon with my brother. we were waiting for people to come into town and were there just drinking beers. a band started loading in and setting up for sound check this big lumbering dude came in and sat at the table next to us and he was dressed in a fur overcoat and dark glasses which was weird but it's all kind of people down there.

he said hi and we said hi but that was about it. then he walks up to the stage at sound check and starts belting out singing and immediately i said "holy **** that's Raul Malo.".

Amazing that one of the best voices in country music was a cuban from Miami but that's what makes music amazing. his voice was just so good it haunted you. we won't see another like him
