Volunteer Fire out there and smoke showing...

I would doubt it is on purpose given that today is at the top of fire risks--unless they decided a controlled burn was better than the chance of an accidental one.

I don't see how they'd allow a controlled burn when the fire risk for today is in the extreme level. Most of the VFD are understaffed for the holidays, and they're putting out little grass fires left and right....

What time did you see this?

RayRay's information is correct...stack is down. The fire dept put it out this morning and pushed it over. At this moment there is no indication of who did it...Student Bonfire DID NOT light the stack.

There is no need for anyone to get bent out of shape and start jumping to conclusions, please let the proper authorities sort all this out.

And don't drive out to Hot Rod Hill to see it. You will not be allowed in. Do not climb the fence or the owner will call the cops.

The year 2005 was a pain in the neck for the Browns, owners of Hot Rod Hill. First the neighbors squawked about the noise from his race track and had it shut down, then Bonfire fizzled on first attempt and ran into the Burn Ban before it could be fired a second time. Seems to me Mr. Brown did his best to live up to the bargain in his Bonfire dealings. Give him a thumbs up when you see him again and wish him well in future endeavors.

The remains from the off campus bonfire have stood on Hot Rod Hill since November. But on New Years Day, property owner Wayne Brown says he woke up to smoke and flames.

"It was smoking it looked like it hadn't been lit too long because I think it was burning on the inside," said Wayne Brown, owner, Hot Rod Hill.

Brown says once he saw the flames peaking out from the stack he called the Brazos County Sheriff's office.

"We started calling a few minutes after nine and someone had already called it in," said Brown.

The stack burned and started to fall, the volunteer fire and sheriff's departments arrived minutes later along with County Judge Randy Sims.

"Today was a very dangerous situation because of how high the wind was," said Judge Randy Sims, Brazos County.

It took fire officials six hours to put out the flames and keep them from spreading, but this bonfire battle is far from over.

"I don't think that bonfire ignited by itself and that's what is so scary. I am going to certainly tell the Sheriff all I observed out there," said Sims.

"This was a headache I think people that did that and cost the county that kind of money should be prosecuted," said Brown.

Sheriff's officials say at this time a lot of information, like who lit the fire and why, is still unknown. But Brown says, he has ruled out the possibility that the fire was lit by students.

"We had a plan to have people back out from the student body cause they built it so I can't see that makes any sense," said Brown.

The sheriff's office says it appears as though someone, or some group, snuck onto the property and lit the fire. But this time around, whomever lit the stack will be facing more than just a citation for burn ban violation. They could also be facing criminal charges for trespass and arson.

Why?

Just the first of two moronic statements, I understand, but why is it "safer" that someone burnt it down while students were not here?

Wow this is not good. I hope with all of the battles that student bonfire is already facing that non of the members are reasponsible for doing this and making more trouble.

Stop making assumptions about who lit it. There is an arson investigation, that will determine the outcome. This is not likely to hurt our future either.

Once again, do not go out there unless you're asked to go out there. The next steps are being planned out.

Was Bonfire from 1909 until the mid-to-late 1930's not Bonfire?

It was stupid for somebody to come up and set that thing on fire like that no matter if the extreme fire risk is there or not, you just don't know how stable it is after being burnt. No matter what though its possible that it might cause some trouble to the organization, after all it was our structure.
The only thing I can see good out of it is that we might not have to foot the bill for tearing it down. Especially if they catch the little punks. Wouldn't be surprised if it was just some high school kids. Don't know anyone in AGSB that would be stupid enough to do something like that. Especially after being told not to go out there by greys.

After getting a call on New Years day from Slim, I had to go out to HRH to see for myself. Luckily, I had yesterday off and was able to do so. To say the least, I am pissed.

Bonfire has been reduced from 40+ ft. to about 5 ft. tall.

After meeting with the head green pot for '06, I headed out to site to survey the damage at about 2:00. When I got to the race track, Mr. Brown was there giving an interview to a news crew. I declined to make a comment because I refuse to be pictured along-side a pile of fallen logs. Too much '99 imagery.

I made a slow survey of the mess of logs that was still smouldering.



1. As soon as humanly possible, there needs to be a crew of at least 15 people with chainsaws, wire cutters, and a wood chipper to take care of this mess.

2. Please do not hinder the efforts of law enforcement and do your best to be forthcoming with all information that you may have about this act of arson.

3. Remain calm. This is probably a result of some drunk kids playing with fire and nothing more. Shame on them. Stack needed to be dealt with, but this was definately not the means by which it should have been done.

I pray that whoever did this comes forward and pays for it. I am out of words to express how I feel right now, sorry. I'll compose myself better later.
