I was not there when it was being put out or taken down, so I really don't have any clue how it was re-ignited. The logs still had char on them from November, so any new burning looked exactly the same. I was also not able to discern what part of stack was lit and what caught, because the back-hoe had pulled all the logs down and scattered them.

Chainsaw, Fencing pliers, and a wood chipper. Get to work, boys and girls. it's time to make some mulch.

At least the stack of wood finally burned.

Bonfire ended in 1999, anything else is nothing but a BBQ.

Have you been out to cut or stack with Aggie Student Bonfire, TAMU98AG?

If not, then you are speaking from a position of ignorance.

From the looks of the video that WillD posted it looks like it was burning from the back side of the stack. Look at the video about 41 seconds in.

WillD you can save the video by right click, save target as, on the link you posted

Why didn't it burn to begin with?

It had trouble on Nov 19th for a miriad of reasons... some being that we didnt have a long enough soak time, we did not have enough airspace and we did not take into account that pine has a fire-retardant bark (that works so well in forrest fires)

long story short, we didnt do our homework

Wow, pine, really?

Must have been a really easy cut!

Plus if you really feel that way, why go troll on an internet message board thread about the other Bonfire?

I think abortion is an unconscienable sin, but I don't troll pro-choice message boards berating people that don't agree with me.

A mock-up 1:10 scale stack was made, doused, and lit prior to burn night and it burned just like the real stack did: for a few minutes then just fizzled out. Hindsight is 20:20 on this one and we should have seen it coming.

It also didn't help that the mock-up stack was held together by duct tape, taking credibility away from it's inability to stay lit. A mock-up stack will be made prior to Centerpole being buried next year, along with a few other changes. It will be a more scientific endevour to estimate burn time, flame-ups, safety, and the viability of construction materials.

Good news: Stack is dis-assembled.
Bad news: Instead of being a pile of ashes, it has been reduced from a 50 x 40 x 40 stack to a 5 X 100 X 100 mess.

We can't do anything but clean up the mess and keep our ears open for someone bragging about lighting stack. I would be out there cleaning up this weekend if I didn't have my calendar packed through Feb. 26th. Time to get to work, ladies and gentlemen. There is work to be done.

Regarding the "mini-stacks" and experimentation, you'll be happy to know that some of that has already been done. A small subset of the Hogs conducted some very well designed experiments on several stacks varying soaking time, type of fuel, additional kindling, and other factors to determine the best way to burn down the remaining stack. Although the results won't really be needed now, it is good information to have as a starting point for this year.

TAMU98AG- said to see someone in the same class year as part of my family acting like a 2%.....

The mock up stack at hot rod hill stood for 20 sec before falling, thus not accurate. Doesn't matter now.

opie, who are you btw? I think somebody told me a while back, but it slipped my mind. What media was there when you were there? KBTX? I was there from around 2-9 with BOB.

We cannot disturb the logs until the investigators are finished taking samples and anything else they need. Once that is over, the next step will be taken to start clean up.

The resident scientist was left out the experiments?! Can I at least peer-review the article before you publish it?

I was not aware that the whole deal was under investigation. I didn't see any yellow police tape or uniformed officers out when I was there.

{edit} If you haven't met me, please introduce yourself. Old guys like me tend to have trouble with the names of all you young'ens.

If you were there at 2:00, you must have been wearing your invisible cloak because I didn't see you.

I didn't know there had been any experiments, but it is nice to know that it has been done.

Check your Facebook message.

The news said that Sims was starting an investigation. We'll know soon if they're done and then start working.

Fossil, the Browns were given plenty of chances to dampen the noise of the racetrack before it was shut down. The neighbors had every right to complain as Hot Rod Hill was built after these houses were already there. My parents live about a half mile from the track and could EASILY be heard from their inside their house. I can only imagine how bad it was for the people who lived across the street. If there is anyone to blame here, its the county for allowing it to be built so close to homes in the first place. The residents did what any of you would do if a racetrack was built across the street from you. One elder woman that lived there said she would have to drive to a parking lot and sleep in her car until the races were over.

Interesting, Padfoot. Any negative comments I have ever made about the complaining neighbors was based on being told that the track was there first and the houses were built later. Kind of like building your house next to a dairy and complaining about the smell. The reverse holds as well, though. If someone decided to build a dairy in the middle of a neighborhood, I would have no sympathy for them when facing resistance.

Thanks for the view from the other side. Since I don't know which version is correct, I'll stay out of the HRH vs Neighborhood discussions from now on.

No problem at all Coke. Many people did not realize this and therefore feel sorry for Mr. Brown. However, everyone should feel sorry for the elderly people that were driven from their homes at night because this track was built right across from their house that they had lived in for years and years

There were people who live near hot rod hill who were forced to go sleep in their cars in the walmart parking lot because they couldn't even hear themselves think!

I don't think they are really blaming Bonfire folks, Lew. Probably just pointing out facts that a few like me might not have realized. My understanding is that shutting down the races doesn't directly affect having Bonfire there, anyway.

Probably best just to let this die or start it up in another thread.
