LEW, that was one of the change Bonfire commision cited as a problem.......it only started going realy vertical in the 90's i beleive. look at 69, that thing leans WAY in.
Shoot even the OC stacks lean in some(that pic of it with the first to stacks on this year show it very clearly.)

the lean that 07 has is alot like what OC bonfire(at least this year) has. I'm not an engineer but i would imagine even that little bit of lean makes the stack much more secure.
I was actualy at 98..... My cousin graduated that year.

Yeah, but those upper stacks on the 90s Fires are not touching the ground. The OC Fire has all logs touching the ground. That and the additional Windle sticks makes the most difference.
The lean does more than just structual things for the stack. It also allows more air flow into the inner layers of the stack, which as we have seen the last few years can become a major problem if there is not enough soak time.
Bonfire '97 had four weeks of stack due to the opening of the Bush Library. The administration wanted to have pisshead wrap over with and Centerpole up before the media came to town.
As a result, stack was exceptionally fat. The fourth stack crossties were buried. The size difference between fourth and fifth stacks in '97 was much, much larger than the picture posted above.
This one was from a long time back, probably early 90s, it's amazing how people look the same out there as people you used to know. For example, two of the guys out there this year looked like old Yellow Pots from OCA I used to know.
