It has been brought up here by BCs members that Student Bonfire lacks some of the traditions that are Aggie Bonfire. I would like to know what these traditions are and why they have to be there for it to be Aggie Bonfire. Please list a reason why.

I'll start.

Burn on-campus - reason, obvious

less tolerant of alcohol abuse: reason obvious

I would say, not tolerant.

yeah...it was hard to word that because my way makes it sound like there is still some tolerance, but saying "no longer tolerant" makes it sound like there was 100% tolerance in the '90s...

How about this...

New, strictly enforced, zero-tolerance alcohol policy: reason obvious

University affiliated-it's not Aggie without Texas A&M!

This is a difficult topic to cover because very few people have been involved in both orginizations.

SB has attempted to bring back all of the traditions that contributed positively to Bonfire. We have worked very hard at removing all of the negitive traditions that were rampant in the late 90's.

In that sense, we have tried to cary on as close to the FTAB traditons as possible. We hope that Texas A&M will decide in the future to allow Bonfire back on campus. Once that happens, SB will have fulfiled it's role of keeping the tradition alive in it's time off campus.

I guess I am still confused.. BCS never says that SB doesn't carry on traditions....

Zero alch. = work in progress in 1990's...AWESOME that SB has achieved that

on campus.. well that is obivous..but Bonfire was off campus from 1902 - 1909...common knowledge even for BCS members.. so we dont say that...

Nor was it university recognized until the late 40's

WRONG!

If it is built by Aggies it is Aggie Bonfire, no matter where it is built or who recognizes it.

If it is University affiliated, but students are not the main (95%) contributors, workers, leaders, etc. it is not Aggie Bonfire. PERIOD.

I have spoken.

i think she was comparing it positivley, with a hint of sarcasm.

Jayci is a green pot for SBA, and is someone i respect a good deal.

You have to understand(i understand more than i did not long ago) that SBA walks a very fine line in the sand using anything with the word Aggie, ATM, or any variation. They are trademarked, and....well you get the idea. Thats why you dont see much merchandise from SBA with anyhting A&M on it.

I think jayci meant there both traditions of the university, both aggie traditions. I doughbt seriously she would claim SB is not aggie bonfire. If she is, im going to fall out of my chair in suprise.

Ummm... the Univ was trying to get zero alc out there (remember the "Don't let alcohol shatter the tradition" campaign?) ... All that really did was more entrench the place of alcohol at bonfire unfortunately. Kinda like telling a high school kid not to drink, just makes him wanna drink more than he did before...

I'm not saying that the Univ wasn't working on zero tolerance, they just didn't go about it the right way. Unfortunately, you can't change bonfire from the bottom up, change must be made top down.

Anyways, I know there are some major differences between old bonfire and new, but in all reality, aside from the actual structure of stack, it is the exact same spirit. I can't think of one thing missing from new bonfire that I don't miss from days gone by. Except for third stack swings Hell, we've even got midnight to six again (or they did last year)

Sorry I missed the sarcasm (maybe I'm not the only one?). My filter must have been turned off last night. It was late and after a long day.

And this part was meant to show that the post was not meant to be read as meanly as it sounded. It was my own bit of sarcasm. I mean, who the hell am I and what makes me such an f'n expert? I'm really not as much of a pompous a55 as it may have sounded.

I'll try not to post when exhausted from now on.

wrong Bonfire started in 1909 was brought onto campus after the 1935 fire.

One thing I've noticed, there's alot of people trying to be experts about **** they know nothing of.

It was already on campus by 1928 (see the photo in the other thread); it just wasn't officially recognized until after 1935.
