Howdy Ags!

(First I have to preface that I am not currently involved with either org right now.. I just want to get BONFIRE BACK! Each day that passes makes it that much harder to get it back...)

I was bored today at work and was just sitting here thinking of ways to try and see how many current students are RED-AS$ enough to care about getting Bonfire Back...

There is a petition of 1,000+ Ags on Facebook who support it...so why does BCS have only 35 members? I realize that they have had thier troubles in the past (PLEASE DO NOT RE-HASH THEM HERE!) but how will they improve if people who give a sh*t won't join the fight?

It has been agreed on in previous threads by both sides that getting Bonfire Back ON CAMPUS will require the succes of both.. and working together

After the last thread on these issues I have been thinking now would be a great time to get things going...With First Cut and such... a TON of new Ags joinig the ranks...

NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT!!!

Anywho.. so here are my suggestions...they may be kinda lame but I was trying to come up with ways to unify the front on Bonfire btwn Ags invloved in SB & BCS..

[Any suggestions would also be appreciated...]

(1) coordinate a day on which all people involved in either SB or BCS wear thier Bonfire related stuff (grodes, shirts, hat...whatever you've got) and talk Bonfire up to everyone!

(2) hold a huge-ass get together of sorts.. not a "rally" per-say but more like congrigation to as a show of force....

I mean really.. how else will Dr. Gates know how many Ags care unless we all can stand up and be counted???

(3) A sharing of knowledge effort btwn both BCS and SB.... Perhaps a neutral consolidated website.. to list:
- ACURATE history of both orgs
- Each orgs purpose & goals
- record of lines (which would help BCS get old ags to come teach our members instead of us having to rely on what we find at cushing)
- Dorm info such as proper pot colors, etc
- one place to list a schedule of current events & happenings

BCS is oging to fight that hard because they want to keep the "legitamacy" factor on there side. Thats whats brought the animosity between groups to the forefront.

This causes confusion. Imagine if all the republicans and demorcrats rallied under red signs and elephants. I'm not saying the two organizations are similarly polarized, but the illustration works.

Been there, done that, lead yells in the rain (2/6/2002). Nothing was done except for a write up in the Batt and we just ended up getting wet.

Nope. Can't happen. That would show that either SB is associated with the University or BCS is associated with an off-campus Bonfire. Both cause legal and/or organizational problems for the groups.

Both organizations agree that Bonfire is a good thing. Both will continue to move in that direction.

Okay, so the ideas had some serious flaws...I get that...

The website was a poor idea I guess.. I just know that there are some complaints that SB likes to say about BCS.. but that can't ever be resolved unless there is more sharing of common knowledge...but I guess that can also be accomplished through more dialouges like the ones here on TexAgs...

2nd...as far as the Yells in the rain in '02...I was a student then and don't recall ever hearing about it...if I had..I'd have been there!

I was one of the founding general members in BCS...and was (and still do) pay attention to ANY efforts to raise awareness about Bonfire...so surely it would have made sense for me to have at least heard about it?

Perhaps it seemed like an event more for Ags working on UP/ SB? (I honestly don't remember)

And besides...Just because it didn't work exactly like was hoped didn't mean it wasn't sucessful. You say that there was a write up about it in the Batt...

Last time I checked even "bad press" was good press...at least someone noticed a bunch of Red-A$$ Ags that want Bonfire Back...and isn't that the point? Whats a little rain if it means getting Bonfire back?

Lastly, I din't mean to cause confusion with the suggestion that both orgs wear Bonfire stuff...

Perhaps I didn't make very clear what I meant.. let me try again...

If there was an organized effort by BCS to get the WHOLE STUDENT BODY (including SB) to wear Pro-Bonfire attire it surely would be noticed...

WOULD YOU DO IT? WOULD YOU WEAR YOUR STUFF?

Think about it..if 1,000 + Ags were wearing Bonfire stuff all on the same day.. it would get a ton of press/ notice...

SB could distinguish themselves & wear SB shirts...BCS could wear our shirts (and thus avoid ANY confusion) and the rest of the student body could wear whatever they had... etc.

I know that it walks a VERY fine line.. but it would be a great way for the Student Body to push the issue in a respectable manner..to show how much we STILL want Bonfire...To show that the fire, desire and passion for Bonfire IS and WILL ALWAYS be a part of the hearts and minds of Aggies.. no matter how long we have to wait and now matter how hard certian peope try to kill it's spirit.

BCS has been trying to find better ways to connect with the whole student body..to politely "push the envelope" but "play by the rules" of the TAMU Administration. BCS wants to get bonfire back as SAFELY and as SOON as possible, while forming good relationships with Dr. Gates and the rest of the TAMU Admin, Faculty & Student Body...without thier cooperation and stamp of approval it will NEVER return to campus...

but without the backing of the student body there is no reason for Gates (or any TAMU Admin) to even see the need. I know that SB has a good percentage and BCS makes of a small number too.. but there are TONS of Aggies that are in between.. in "the gap".. who either don't know, who don't care or who ride the fence on which way will contribute best to getting Bonfire Back...

Also, like I said.. any additional/ different sugestions would be appreciated...obiviously those of you posting here know how fine a line both orgs must walk...but there HAS to be a way to bridge the gap...

What says a person cannot be a member of both organizations?

I need to correct the date of the protest. Bowen made his announcement on Monday (2/4/02) and the demonstration was staged Tuesday at 4:00pm; which appeared in the Wednesday (2/6/02) paper. There was no time for a press release, news article, or anything more than word of mouth and e-mail / IM.

The future leaders of UP were there, a bunch of random students, as well as some participants of the then-defunct KTFB. It was more of a "Hey, we aren't going to be rail-roaded out of a Bonfire" deal that was quickly put together. Feel free to find the story in the Batt archives or find me out at Cut this Saturday afternoon and Sunday. I'll be wearing a black pot and pants with a bunch of patches all over them.

I remember organizing the yell on Bowens lawn. Really thought it was gonna be me and like 50 other people. Had no idea it was gonna be as big as it was.

I was there in the rain of '02. That was the day I realized being an Aggie was more than just being a student at Texas A&M. I was cynical, but loved Bonfire because of the stories. I remember I was walking up when the War Hymn was being sung. Someone motioned my to hurry up for sawing varsity's horns off. It stuck with me. So that yell practice affected at least one person.

Now that you all mention it...

I DO remember that story in the Batt ... and the rally on the president's lawn...

and being SERIOUSLY TICKED OFF that I hadn't heard about it so that I could have gone...

(Not ticked off at any one person.. just kinda frustrated with the whole situation ...as we all were when Bowen released his decision & the 2002 report)

We all were, TAg05. We all were.

Some still carry that frustration. The rest of us go out and build Bonfire.
