I have my estimate from the number of cars the parking lot crew think they parked (which includes me). Consider the length of our parking rows I would say just over 1600 cars, and you do an average of 2.5 per a car, then you should get a rough number of 4000.
I'm just using a system I use at the Hall to estimate the amount of people. My original numbers (for cars which about 2200) went down after the guys said they didn't get them close like we do at the Hall. If you know how close we get them at the Hall you know that would make a huge difference. But don't trust me on this.
well considering I don't count the money, I can't say that. And then you can't count the cars that may have not paid, and it still doesn't give you attendance.............. it doesn't always work that way
The police at 2549 & 319 tried to turn one of our crew away at 9ish and she said he had already turned away a whole bunch of cars infront of them and there was a line about a mile long behind them. So figure thats another 200+ atleast that got turned away.
we ended up turning around when I nearly ran out of gas waiting in line. I had heard someone say they were sending people away starting at 9:30 so it just didn't seem like we'd make it in time. Very bummed but we scanned the sky for flames and drove with the windows open to listen and smell.
We've either turned people away or had long lines to see it every year (except the rain year I believe). In 2003, i think we delayed 2 hours and the natives almost got restless.
You almost have to threaten that you will not be allowed in unless you get there an hour before. But then, allow those few late people to get through. People will always show up late, and sometimes, its their fault. All you can do, is to stress over and over, to show up early.
Unfortunately, we arent in a position financially to be able to afford to turn too many people away...so I understand why we moved the time back. However, i think that eventually, we need to burn it on time and force people to show up earlier to see it.
Oh there's no doubt that some people are intentionally late. I talked to several more people this week and a few made the comment they were turned away at 9:15ish. This wasn't due to them being stuck in traffic it was due to the fact that they didn't leave CS till 8:30. For whatever reason they just decided they would be fashionably late. Looks like they fashionably didn't get to see Bonfire.
Who would show up "fashionably" late to bonfire? It's not like you make an appearance or anybody sees you. The fact of the matter is that they show up late because they know it won't be lit on time.

"Fashionable late" was a figure of speech, I though most could figure that out. No the people I talked to didn't expect to show up and have the red carpet rolled out for them, most of them just screwed around and left CS late and therefore got there late. They didn't choose to show up late "cause they know it wont be lit on time".
As far as the lighting it late. There was heavy traffic on 2549 and therefore it was decided to delay burn for a little bit to allow a few more people to enter. I considered it to be thoughtfull on the part of leadership.
