Bishop Daniel Garcia returns to Austin

Bishop Garcia is a native of Austin who currently serves as Bishop of Monterrey, California.

Installation Mass date TBD.

I remember him as being a very humble priest when he was in Austin previously.

Looks like he directed his priests to not provide letters for religious exemptions to the clot shot

During our stint in Waco, I recall him being involved in the decision to prevent our homeschool coop from using any parish space. There was an antagonistic element from the diocesan Catholic schools office against homeschooling.

That has been an "on again, off again" trend in the Austin Diocese.

I believe each Bishop we've had since I've been here has presided at at least one annual Homeschooling Mass. We have also had years when the Bishop refused to allow a Homeschool Mass. (same Bishop)

It's an unfortunate thing. Often times, we're seen as "the competition" to their schools... and viewed with suspicion as possibly not teaching the Faith to our kids. My wife taught at St. Helen's (Georgetown) over 20 years ago. Some are good, faithful, orthodox teachers, but most have some sort of error they hold to. Based on that, I trust my wife more than teachers in the schools. Further, I can't afford these schools even if we were so inclined.

Anytime you read "Catholic Social Teaching" just interpret that as "Communism."

I do not agree.

Pope Saint John Paul II was instrumental in facilitating the fall of Communism in Poland and the Soviet Union.

The Catholic Church has never supported Communism. There are some teachings that some may interpret as being Socialist, but not Communist.

The biggest social teaching in that vein is the "preferential treatment for the poor"; which would be Socialist compared to Ayn Rand's philosophy, but really only means that those who have more have a responsibility to help those who do not have enough.

In practice, this has a wide variety of interpretations.

Liberation theology says "hello" and with certain religious orders and ethnic groups it is a cancer.

Agree. Leo XIII is the father of modern Catholic social teaching and excoriated both communism and socialism. The Catholic Church teaching seems to embrace more of a socially responsible capitalism. Make your money, but beware the folly of building bigger barns.

Catholic social teaching is the antidote to both socialism and consumerism

Private property and individual economic freedom tempered with responsibility and obligation
