Anybody besides me watched season 2? I'm Gen X, so a little too old for all of the Ron Luce and Josh Harris stuff. Didn't really know anything about Teen Mania, Acquire the Fire, Battle Cry, or Honor Academy. Not surprised that it was backed by so many culture war evangelicals. Dobson showed less discernment the older he got. But I didn't realize Chuck Colson had been so easily duped.

I lived in Tyler in the late 90s / early 2000s and had no idea that camp was so close or what was going on there. I'm actually surprised I didn't hear more about it considering I was still very active in church at the time.

I grew up close by and went to a few events out there. Never any missions though the program but spent time out there for various things. It was pretty obvious it went both ways. 1) Was the Lord present and could you grow closer to Him in the moment? Yes. 2) Could you see lots of people doing it for their own gain or for show? Yes also.

So its a documentary about people using religion for their own prosperity or motives? Hasn't that been going on for a while? Tired topic.

Yes shining light into darkness is an extremely tired, and tiring, topic. I hope to still be doing it when I die. Psalm 71.

And here's a generous, but prescient, blog from many years ago.

I guess one thing that is interesting is that these people were much "closer to home" than a lot of the charlatans we see. It's so easy to believe "we must increase" instead of "he must increase."

I hear ya there. I'm looking at it from the secular documentarian who thinks this is the big gotcha reveal. Maybe they should do one on Osteen next.

I edited while you were posting. Yeah, the expose' on people who aren't really in my camp is one thing. Could be Joyce Meyer, TD Jakes, Kenneth Copeland, to some extent Osteen.

But abuses in the SBC, or the neo-Calvinist movement...this stuff catches my attention. I may not agree with them on everything, but they are close cousins. Then you find out who Paige Patterson really is, or David Jeremiah, or Ravi Zacharias, or Mark Devers, or Mark Driscoll, or Liam Goligher...and it hits a little differently.

Wasn't Liam Goligher in Oasis?

IDK. I'm 53, and fortunately didn't have to cut my teeth on 1990's poor excuses for rock music. I know the dude from Astonomer got what he deserved for his affair, but the added disgrace of having to attend a Coldplay concert is too much for a man to bear.
