Okay. Which of those do you find to be the most controversial or confusing? Which have the biggest impact on your understanding of what the text was designed to convey?

The translation of "young woman" to "virgin" seems kinda important.

But beyond that, how many errors are there we don't know about because the words are accurate but the meaning was idiomatic?

It reminds me of when I was watching an old movie with Jack Lord in it. He's a hit man and he asks his employer, "Do you want me to draw a bead on the pigeon?" I understood he meant, "Do you want me to shoot the targeted individual?" But if that were translated directly into another language a couple hundred years from now, would it make any sense? You could get every word right and still get the meaning completely wrong.

And Good things happen to bad people

That's Ps. 73.

Lessons:

  • There's an active, spiritual, unseen realm, in which we are participating in whether we like it our not.
  • God allows us to be tested.
  • Satan is the one doing the harm for the purpose that God is cursed and Job suffers.
  • God's silence doesn't mean He's vacated His throne or is uninterested.
  • God loves Job very much.
  • God doesn't answer Job's question.
  • Job's greatest need is a fresh view of God or a reminder of who God is.
  • Job's greatest moment is humility before God when God speaks.
  • God restores Job.
  • There's a ton of noise from humans that want Job to curse Job and die and his friends to try to make sense of what cannot be explained.
  • The answer to the "Why does God allow" is not as important as the answer to the questions "who is God and how should I properly respond to Him"
