Ultimately, I think most of these will go away once Trump extracts minor concessions, but it's shocking how many "Republicans" genuinely believe a freakin sales tax is somehow going to fix most of what's wrong with our country.

It's also amazing that they are now in support of increasing corporate tax rates just because it's now Trump's idea.

Because that's the only problem this administration is working on, right?

Other actions don't make any less silly the belief that tariffs can fix all these societal problems. An import tax that lowers everybody's purchasing power so that a few people can continue to work in (or return to working in) economically non viable sectors is not going to change the trajectory of the middle class. To quote big Rob, this is liberal idiocy.

That said, I do think that Trump's mostly swinging tariffs around to extract concessions in return for mostly retracting them. I don't think we'll have high, widespread tariffs in a year.

But many think that we should NOT charge tariffs even if others charge us.
That is my prime disagreement. If others charge, we charge. If they don't, we don't.

Quite possibly even worse than TACO. Man the left cannot meme.

Nor do they have concept of negotiating. Somehow if you started bargaining with a car dealer and you paid one cent above your first offer then you are a failure at deal making, broke campaign promises, and chickened out.

Makes folks wonder if we live in reality anymore.

I think the bigger issue is all these socialist and communist countries that prop up their hand selected industries with the so called non tariff tariffs like a credit to buy their own

In some cases it's a competitive disadvantage for our industries

But in other cases it's a matter of national security like rare earths / magnets, pharmaceuticals...etc

Growing the manufacturing base! I'm just glad we don't pay these tariffs. Canada, China and the rest of the world are paying off our national debt.

How does Canada pay this 35% tariff?

Places like Canada and China can't lose their industrial base and the jobs because the system collapses and the people revolt. So they will subsidize the companies either directly or indirectly to keep prices competitive and thus they "pay" off our debt for us. If they don't the manufacturing and jobs will leave and go elsewhere. The only way they can have leverage is when they make a product we can't get from somewhere else.

The best solution of course is to lower tariffs and everyone wins but we have the leverage and are going to dictate terms. That's the game. Eventually Canada will crater or further spiral into becoming a 3rd world country.

They reduce their cost to remain competitive.

OR the buckle like all the other countries and concede to a better trade deal with the US... they need us way more than we need them.

I want Trump to post a running total of tariff gains. That would show people what we are making now.
And send the money to pay debt.
