The proposed amnesty bill supposes that illegals that have been in the US for more than 5 years are more likely to be quality American citizens.

The problem is if you've illegally been in the US for more than 5 years, and you've delayed going through the citizenship process; it's likely related to internal pride that inherently exposes an unwillingness to become American. There's a preference in identification.

You've only had 2,000+ days to become what you always wanted to become. What does amnesty change?

Just proves to me that those people truly do not care about our laws or this country. They're fully interested in their own self-centered motives.

Yes, let's reward the people who have broken the law for a longer period of time than others.

I think a lot of the issue is human nature. Coming here legally is a long, arduous process, as it should be. It's easier for these folks, especially pre-Trump, to slip over and blend in, and avoid the process. Our immigration laws made it too easy.

Im reminded of Thomas Paine's famous quote -

"That which we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as freedom should not be highly rated."

This. The longer they have been here illegally, in my opinion, means they are more likely not the type to assimmilate.

Don't you have to gain legal status (green card) for a few years and maintain it before applying for citizenship? I'm not aware of there ever having been a direct pathway from illegal to citizen.

That video is infuriating. She paints him as just some honest guy doing roofing jobs. But admits he was pulled over and arrested for not having a drivers license and then ICE showed up. This is the exact type of trash that gets in an accident and leaves you on the hook with uninsured motorist claims.

F that guy. Deport him, revoke citizenship from his kids, and send them all away.

I believe so yes. And that involves going back to your home country, which could leave you stranded there for a long time.

Co-worker's husband was a dreamer and it took him years to get through the process. IIRC, he did have to go back to Mexico at one point and they were very worried he'd not get back into the US.

He did finally get his US Citizenship, but it took a long time and was not cheap.

A counterpoint tho, self centered motives are why legal immigrants have come as well. Chance for a better life. Don't take this the wrong way, I believe those that go thru the legal process should absolutely have a huge leg up on those that don't .

In the spirit of making it a long arduous process for a foreigner to come here legally and live in the US, this pro-illegal immigration bill should be shredded.
No, I don't care what CNN or MSNBC said this time

But they're legal immigrants. They cared enough to do it the right way. That means they have to follow our laws. Illegals don't.

Not arguing that point at all. Just pointing out the motivating factors for many legal and illegal immigrants are similar. Chance at a better life. In that respect I don't begrudge their self centered motives . Methods perhaps but not motives.

This thread is exactly why any bill that comes up in congress must be inclusive of no automatic citizenship just because you've evaded being caught for years.

20+ years and you want to take from America but not become a citizen. Sounds like he should be deported.

Wants better life -> illegally enters and stays in US -> gets deported
