On July 3, staff at the Savannah River Site found the empty nest with unusually high radiation levels, likely contaminated by nearby legacy waste. Officials said the nest was safely removed and the public is not at risk.
However, Tom Clements of Savannah River Site Watch warned of a potentially more troubling cause suggesting the wasps may have collected radioactive material from deeper within the 300-square-mile site, which once produced plutonium and tritium for nuclear weapons.
