International student is a separate category in the stats, and is less than 1%, and was lower % in 2024 than in 2018 at A&M.

0.76% at A&M in 2024. UT-Austin was 4.27% in 2024.

Wow I would have never expected more Nigerians than Canadians went to A&M.

How is international defined in this?

there needs to be place for legacy counting for something in all of this.

I just want the most meritorious to get accepted, regardless of race, ethnicity or any other demographics. Asian Americans follow the success sequence of finishing at least high school, getting a full-time job, and getting married before having children better than any other ethnic group. Because out of wedlock births rarely crosses their minds, Asians lead the country in college education, income, and marriage success rates.

I used to think this but I have changed because is it similar to affirmative action. People need to get in on their own merit and not based on who their parents are, how much they have donated, or who they know in leadership.

Bring in the best students that apply each year and let the demographics and legacies fall where they may.

Because it divides the population.
When the population is divided, no one else is moving up, or a threat.

Disagree 100%

Legacies build a culture of a university. A school will only thrive long term if students have an emotional connection to seeing to succeed.

I wish!
He didn't go to A&M (or any college)

And given your signature block, it's a bit surprising you'd make such a stupid assertion.

When you have fewer and fewer students with lifelong dreams of being aggies, that's how old army goes to hell.

No, actually the speakers I mentioned were from the college department. It was like they are still DEI advocates…

I'm not wanting to increase any certain race admissions but for our university to simply follow the Texas law and end the DEI preference BS. Just like in my business, it's often the students with real life experiences, common sense, competitiveness and drive with good communication skills that will be the most successful, not necessarily the spelling B champions and DEI qualifiers.

As much as I love the tradition of it and arguably benefitted from it, legacy has no place in admission to a public, state-funded college.

I disagree. If two candidates are even, the tie should go to the legacy.

Ok, go see how much in NIL money and other Tx A&M donations you can get from first gen student families, etc.

Ever notice whose name is on the Buildings and Facilities? Where is the Patel and Wong building?
4th gen and currently supporting the university and helping some individual students as have the previous generations. That's what legacy is about. The state/ government doesn't pay for everything- former students who can and will sometimes make a difference.

Bingo. The university relies on them to build those big buildings and buy all those fancy players. Let's just shun their offspring, great idea!!!

Again, taking the top x% of high school seniors is not meritocracy, as long as there are such differences between schools.

Honors classes and AP are night and day difference in different schools and districts.

Screw that, back in the 90's (when legacy was still considered) some of the biggest idiots I knew got into A&M because daddy went there; most of them were gone in a couple of years.

FYI, back then you also got admissions preference if you were planning on joining the Corps as well, times have changed.

Just a hunch- and not to try and be too stereotypical:

The asian community, in general, is known to push their children hard on academics and college admissions

Also, aren't Asian families more likely to remain whole and isnt that a leading indicator and/or theres a high correlation with kids going to college?

I also suspect the recent trends on kids choosing to forgo college who otherwise would go, so much as it exists, is probably led by white males first. I dont think asian students would get support or encouragement to make the same choice, generally speaking.

You are 100% spot on. I have 3 kids. We have been lucky so far that their friend groups include Asian kids who are kind, crazy smart, and very driven. These are the type of kids and families that I want my own kids to be around. And those those Asian moms do not play around. They put up with zero nonsense.

I had plenty of friends in college that had zero family ties to A&M. And they all now give just as much or more back to A&M than even I do.

At the Texas A&M new student conference I went to recently, the speakers were Very Excited about the number of First Generation Students. They had a special lunch and program for them with follow up programs during the school year. I noticed a Surprising number of Asian/ Indian looking students in the group.

I have a question- does anyone actually Verify the claims of First Generation Student? It was Very Clear the admissions success was being judged by the number/ percentage of these students.

Follow up- Would an Applicant Fraudulently claim first generation student to get admission over other applicants?

Is this happening? Who is checking?

Probably doesn't matter if anyone checks as that isn't one of the conditions for admission. Top 10% at A&M and top 5% at tu are the main decision makers for admission to the two schools.

No worries, I'm sure white attendance at Asian universities is up! All those white males we told to **** off and die wound up on their feet somewhere else, right?

If whites were displacing natives in their home countries anywhere else on the planet, you'd be screaming about colonialism and genocide.

Aren't we talking about Americans who are of Asian descent? Not actual Asian students who grew up in some country in Asia. There's A big difference between the two groups. Asian students who actually grew up and went to high school in an Asian country is less than 1% of the student body.

I don't care about what the students' races are. I care if they are Americans. If they are Texans. And if they embrace the values or Texas A&M.
