When I went 28 years ago, Texas Engineering only gave credit for one semester of calculus even with a 5 on the BC exam. The material in Calculus 2 was what had already been covered in the exam, but the powers that be insisted everyone take it anyway.

The first 2 semesters of calculus and engineering physics weeded out a large number of top 10% people, who either couldn't handle the math, or realized that despite the well paying job they'd be happier in Business School or Liberal Arts. I had a few friends at A&M studying engineering, and it sounds like the experience there was pretty similar.

Our senior had to take an online math placement exam as part of "step 1" of student orientation for college (Michigan State). They had a proctored option and nonproctored depending on your major and placement needs/wants.

I entered A&M with 43 hours of credit (30 from AP, 10 from community college, and 3 from SAT II). Much of it wasn't applicable to my major, though.

No, it keeps them employed and doing something. In 10 years the same profs will claim inequality and hate and demand that SAT requirement be taken off. And the cycle continues.
