Well, the class average was a 65. Looks like Swim won round one. He beat me at least.

Can any former/current 211 people tell me why i should NOT hate this class? I mean, the lectures are not bad at all, it's just the stupid way the tests are written. Really sucks

average on the first test last semester was 58, but he gave us a 19 point bonus opportunity. You should definitely hate that class, the tests are all absurd.

You'll never make it. Get out now. The tests stay difficult and he isn't even trying to weed any of you out.

Good luck.

Wrong. All you gotta do is make it past the Q-drop deadline and it becomes stupid easy.

The class isn't bad at all, I actually thought most if it is pretty damn interesting. He is just one of the few professors that makes sure you know your **** and wont let you get by only "Kind of" knowning the info.

The first couple of tests are rough, but not impossible for sure. Just know those outlines in the back of the book (granted its the same from when i took it) backwards and forwards and don't just memorize how the different things work, but understand it and be able to apply it.

You'll get by, just keep trucking and get through this q-drop deadline. Memorize those chapter outlines and you'll be fine! And he curves/gives you tons of extra credit at the end! Good luck!

This class is tough if one's not particularly good at standardized tests. You can easily miss questions where have the section of notes the question is referencing memorized in your head and still miss the multiple choice question.

I don't have my personal grade back (though deep down inside I don't really want to know.)

Are they supposed to be posted already?

The tests are made to test your comprehension of concepts, not how well you can regurgitate information.

Speak for yourself. I had a 99 after the first 2 tests, and a 93 going into the final. I made a freaking 64 on the final...

i went to 4.0, but based on my score, you wouldn't think so. the way he worded everything messed with my mind. i will never take a test in confidence again. i heard it gets easier after q-drop. i'm just hoping i can make it to then. we have another test next wednesday already.

the grades are up, for the poster who asked earlier

If it makes you feel better giddings, I made a grade in the low 70s on the first one and made either mid-Bs to low A's on the rest.

Ended with a solid B in the class.

Review the outline hard! Aren't there practice questions too? I think there were. If so do them, I remember hearing about them being dropped directly in the test if I remember right.

when I took it he gave 40 bonus points to put on your lowest test grade for participating in two really easy extra credit opportunities. Those points got me an 80 for the class.

When I took him last year nobody got extra credit. It seems as though his tests test you on the random trivia, not the main points. Needless to say it's the only C I've ever made in college.

I just got my grade back...

It's horrible...and I studied quite a bit.

The test sucked. I got behind trying to figure out the scenario for the first few questions and the wording was weird to me. Then I was pressured into getting an answer down quickly for the rest of the test even and probably missed quite a few I knew.

The lectures are interesting. Swim makes it more interesting. But sheesh...his test was the worst I've taken yet.

Took it last semester, got a 40 on the first test, got a B in the class. Stick with it, its not bad... you just have to work a little more than other classes.

Just keep up with these:
Read, Notes on outline during lecture, and 4.0

Like the previous posters have said, it gets easier after the Q-drop and he gives extra credit. Also his final is the same as the old test questions so go back in his office and review your exams

He will curve...I got a C on the 1st test and an A in the class...I remember the 3rd or so test he was like "Well guys, this is your Thanksgiving present I guess because this test should be really really easy and straight forward". Just play his game and you'll get an A or a B...o, and go to 4.0

Gildings,

Welcome to MGMT 211!!!

haha, jk.

The first test is tough, I made a 78 on it and studied my arse off!

I highly recommend 4.0 and go. I didn't go the for the first 2 tests and I did ok..., but as soon as I got into 4.0 and go I made like a 94, 105, and 92 on the final.

From what I witnessed you can make a pretty bad grade on test 1 and still come out with an A!!!

Like people have said before me, it gets easier. and it gets very easy if you study the outline and 4.0 notes hard. This class is all about devoting time and learning the tricks of his test from 4.0.

Good Luck the rest of the way & enjoy the class, it really is interesting!

Be careful with 4.0. He hates that place. I've heard stories.

He can't/won't do anything to people that go to 4.0 and go...they don't "steal" his tests, they make up practice tests based on his style of questions. It is not against the Aggie Honor Code in any way shape or form, as he trys to claim

For the record, I loved the guy and he was one of my favorite profs...he just went a little overboard bashing 4.0 and go.

4.0 warnings by him are scare tactics.

That said, it is a waste of your time to go sit in the building. Just go and buy the sample test questions or borrow them so you have a way to test yourself. The biggest problem with that class for most students was assuming they had studied enough.

Second, no matter what you might say about Swim as a great person and good lecturer, he should not be allowed to use his own textbook.

When I took the class (Fall 06), his "book" looked like a first draft paper. It was unreadable, full of typos, sometimes missing whole sections (which he still tested us over), and simply an excuse to make money off students that are forced to take the class.

His "study guide" was just as bad, sometimes contradicting the book, and the "practice questions" were often plain wrong.

Not to mention, it was some loose-leaf concoction that could not be resold.

That said, I agree it is not pure memorization regurgitation. It was pure memorization and regurgitation with a twist (you'll understand later). First you must memorize everything he says/writes, analyze the ways he is hoping to trick you, then not get tricked. But don't also be surprised to see questions on per memorization of fines (such as the amount for distributors on certain excess emissions-- that will really come in handy in the future!)

Lastly, though, I really thought his Card program and avid devotion to A&M sports were great... but I think there needs to be more "competition" for the curriculum of this class.

This class isnt too hard.
Its memorization.

Not to mention he usually gives an extra credit type deal near the end of the semester.

Grind it out, this is just the tip of the ice berg of low test scores (unless youre planning on being a marketing major )

I took a Q drop and then took the class at Blinn over the summer. Used the same book, covered the same material, but the questions tests were not designed to fail you. I made an A the at Blinn and the class average was about 80-85... better than an average in the 60s with Swim.

how much harder is 211 than 209?

Here is the reason why he dislikes 4.0 and go:

As you can tell, throughout your college career, some teachers allow you to keep a test after you take it and some do not. Swim is one of the teachers that do not allow you to keep a test (copyright/etc). The 4.0 people do not have access to any old tests unless they are stolen, therefore, the questions they make are are something you can do on your own. Swim doesnt like the fact that 4.0 charges students 20$ per study sesssion on stuff that may or may not have any relevance on the test. I never ever went to 4.0 when I took the class for the same reason. If they had access to old tests, that may have been a different story.
NormanAggie

You can not simulate his test questions on your own without a previous student helping you. Since his only "practice questions" from the study guide are completely unlike the test, 4.0 test questions are useful.

To put it another way, if you do not have a friend who has taken the class previously and has an idea of what sort of format to expect for the test, then 4.0 can be that friend.

4.0 got one of his tests when I was a student... He found out because the test average was close to a 80. The following test had completely different questions and the grades started to level out to that 60 average...
