I posted this in the Job Network forum, but figured this is where all the techies live, so I might have better luck here. Staff, please delete if not appropriate.

TLDR: Help me help my nephew with his job search!

I thought I would try the power of the Aggie network to help my nephew with his job search. He has a Bachelors degree in Physics (from Texas State), with a Masters in Robotics & Autonomous Systems (from Arizona State). He knows Python, Java, Javascript and C++, as a start. He is such a smart kid, but the job market is brutal at the moment, so I am trying to help out.

He's not an Aggie, but has lots of Aggie ties: grandfather, mother, father, three uncles, me (favorite aunt!). In fact, to brag a little more on his family: his sister just graduated in May as an Aggie Vet. Another sister graduated as valedictorian at the Coast Guard Academy two years ago (with both a Fulbright and Truman scholarships), and just finished grad school in Iceland.

I figure someone in the Aggie network has got to have some possible leads on a position for him. His father and I have been reaching out to all our contacts, but let's face it - the programming world has left me in the dust. When I got out of A&M, my first job was as a COBOL programmer...now I am lucky I can figure out how to work all the apps on my phone.

Please DM me for full details and his resume. TIA for any help.

This is a brutal market for entry level programmers.

My old office mate's son graduated with a computer science degree 2 years ago. After a failed attempt to make a go of it as a freelancer, he's now working a few days a week at an escape room.

That is very disheartening to hear.

I was talking to a manager on the public sector side of Deloitte this week and he was telling me how difficult it is to find devs for their public sector projects in the Austin market these days.

I'd assume it probably has a bit to do with the ridiculous cost of living around Austin, combined with the lower wage scale inherent in working on a public sector contract. BUT, if he's just looking to lock down his first dev gig and isn't married to the idea of being a top earner right off the bat then it may be worth a look. Thought I'd mention it, just in case.

I'll check within my organization and see if there are any plans to take on entry level positions in the near future. If so I'll let you know and provide you with contact info.

Small world. I worked for Deloitte for 9 years (Dallas office).

That would be great. He grew up in Round Rock, so is very familiar with Austin. And no, he is not looking to be a top earner - just get some 'real life' experience.

I'll reach out to the dev manager I spoke with and see if he'd be interested/willing to review your nephews resume. No promises but I'll check. Wouldn't hurt for him to review Deloitte postings for the Austin area either, just in case. There's nothing available on my end of things at the moment but I'll continue to keep an eye out and stay in touch.

Shouldn't have a problem finding work with a strong background in autonomous systems. Has he looked at the DoD side of things? Anduril, Shield AI, Palantir....

Thank you for the suggestions on companies - I will certainly have him research them. My background is in cloud financial software, so robotics is out of my sphere of contacts.

What type of software development does he want to do? Does it specifically have to be robotics? Game development? AI? Or will an un-glamorous retail management system job suffice, as long as it's coding?
