I'm 40 years old and I quit playing this a looooong time ago….but as a young kid and teenager was in to it for a bit and for whatever reason held on to my collection….

A really good friend of mine out of the blue sent me a text about wondering if I'd be interested in selling all my cards to him…which I was fine with but had no idea what they were worth but figured I had a few worth a decent bit….

He referred me to an app where you can scan what you've got and get market value updates on everything cause he wants to be fair to me and I to him….

So I started scanning a few of what I've got starting with what I expected to be the more rare cards….and holy crap!

Think my most expensive one is around $700 and I've got a few others around $400….grand total currently is about $3,400 and I've still got a long ways to go….granted I think most of what's left are going to be anywhere from $0.20 $2.00….but still….

Is thing still popular???? Or more popular than before??? I would never have guessed some of these cards would be worth what they are….

Outsider here but definitely still popular. Lately they've been doing these crossover cards with Final Fantasy, LOTR, Marvel, Ninja Turtles, etc and I guess it's been a money maker for them because they keep doing them.

I don't know much about the economics of the cards but I have 3-4 friends that still collect and play, which is more than I knew that played as a kid or teen.

Would sell the **** out of these and not look back if you can actually get that kind of money.

that's what I'm thinking. I don't expect exact market value especially if I'm selling to a close friend but yeah I ain't holding on to these if they're worth that much….plus I'm not even done getting to a fina number yet….not even close….

So yeah once I get a good idea of where I'm at once I've scanned everything I'm gonna offload these ASAP…

Edit: be funny if my dad was still around…always gave me a hard time about buying these when I was a kid and then keeping them as I got older saying, "those won't ever be worth anything when you're older!"

One thing to look for is the prices for graded vs non-graded.

A lot of those high prices are PSA 10 grades. Also getting them graded isn't always worth it.

We have a card that is worth over $400 loose. If it grades a 10 it's worth more than double that, but if it's graded an 8 or a 9, it's worth less. Plus you have to pay to get it graded.

if you take it to a retail store, they'll offer 70-80% market value. If you take it to a card show you may get 90-95% if you find someone that's looking for that specific card.

Otherwise eBay or tcgplayer is a good place to list it online for whatever you want for it. But the site will take their cut.

The market is hot right now. I keep waiting for the bubble to burst but haven't seen any indication that's it's coming soon.

I will say I read a funny story about how Magic TCG was sued for printing too many cards and driving the value down.

Glad you listed TCGplayer that's the source I'm using for these values so seems like that's a better indicator for how I'm doing this.

We just came back from a show today and tcgplayer was used several times to look up values for trades. I've been happy with it.

I played a ton in high school with our friends. Only one still keeps up with the game. I've tried to get back in a few times, but it has gotten to be a very expensive hobby. It certainly feels like WOTC is prioritizing the collection aspect of the game over anything else, and IMHO it makes it way less appealing as a fun game

What app are you using the scan your cards?

I know I have some dual lands in my collection that are worth a bit but I'm clueless if the rest of my cards hold any decent value.

I am an old 90s player myself but have been following the newer stuff the last 5 years. (it got too complicated)

on the old stuff, theres little things here and there that could make your old card seem like its not worth much, but could actually be worth a ton.

If you have stuff from Alpha, beta, unlimited, revised, Antiquities, Dark, Arabian nights, Legends etc its worth looking into quite a bit before just TCGPlayer or an app scan.

For example: Revised and Unlimited look similar to someone not familiar, and that mistake could be hundreds of dollars. Another example, is Summer Magic: looks like revised but darker with a Copywrite year on the bottom line. easily makes it 10x or more in price due to rarity

id be happy to look at any pictures or try to answer questions about what you might have just PM me or email in profile.

Any time I get into an argument with my wife I like to remind her about the time she threw out all of my Revised edition MTG collection...including over 30 dual lands.

I was at a swim up bar all inclusive in Cabo watching the masters last week. Started talking to a guy (looked like a bearded Texan, but said he is in Seattle). Pretty sure that is his business. They built robotics to physically scan front and back, provide gradings using AI, and this is for all types of cards (baseball, Pokemon, Magic TG), and their interface allows you to sell... maybe on their interface, or I think he said straight through Ebay. I am almost certain this is that guy's company.

read the rest of the thread. His is where people can send in their physical cards which are scanned by robotics, databased, graded, and AI checked on current value with the option of selling on marketplace (pretty sure Ebay but not sure). They might have had a virtual application but I did not ask that.

Had a badlands at one point and a beta force of nature. That was worth a lot back in the year 2000.

Also an original lord of the pit and I think… 4th edition? Sorceress Queen.

Don't ever know where they all ended up. My brothers kept playing table top games (hero clix like CRAZY), dragon ball Z card game etc.

I bought a starter deck and some boosters about 6 years ago to play with a buddy who did the same. It just isn't the same.

Man did I love my Black creature / drain life deck. That thing was filthy in the year 2002.

I try not to think to much about what I traded around back in the mid-90s.

"ill give you the 2 weird double lands for that Shivan Dragon!"

what is shivan worth now? $10... Those 2 duals? $500-700 each.

I remember walking into Kingwood Comics and Cards in the 90s and seeing a Black Lotus for sale for about $150. Im like, who would pay that for ONE card. Then I spent my $150 on 1 box of upper deck basketball cards and a bunch of Fallen Empires/Ice age booster packs all worth just about nothing now.

Ahh yes. Ice Age. I had many of those. Tempest, Arabian knights, I don't ever remember now.

I had antiquities, Legends. The dark, ice age, 4th edition. Mirage, 5th. Exodus, all the Urza's stuff.

Don't remember any after that.

I had this paired with lots of flying, trample, +x/0 spells, vampiric touch, life drain. Of course, all the old cards suck compared to the newer ones.

The app I'm using is called "ManaBox" and it's been pretty great so far….

Up to $4,140 now….

In case if anyone's curious these are the cards I've got according to TCG that are worth over $50….

Lions Eye Diamond $696
City of Traitors $486 x2
Eartchcraft $146
Ancient Tomb $123 x2
Volrath's Stronghold $95
Mana Vault $85
Keldon Warlord (alpha) $84
Demonic Tutor $60 x3
Humility $60

If you have dual lands those are definitely worth $$$$. Wish I had some of those…

Nearly 40 here and had never played MTG before. On our yearly ski trip, we had several guys bring decks to teach the rest of us and we all had a great time. I have a couple commander decks now.

The Commander game is really popular and there are some old cards that they wouldn't make nowadays that give you an advantage to that type of gameplay. Those cards have a high value.

Have a full playset + of Dual Lands, also 3 Lion's Eye Diamonds. Couple of Wheel of Fortunes, and lots, lots more from revised/dark/unlimited/ice age/etc.

I got in during unlimited, and have an unlimited plateau.

I stopped collecting about 10 years ago or so, and never really priced my stuff, but have a couple of friends who are on me too. I imagine I have quite a bit based on how many cards I accumulated over time.

My favorite deck was a Kobold deck that was complete, with all the kher cards as well. And if I didn't like you, I had a nasty land destruction deck.
