The family is taking a trip this summer to stay on the Frio in Leakey and wanted to get recommendations on things to do in the area (and restaurants).

Got a few kiddos ranging in age from 2 to 11 and we'll be staying in a vrbo with river access. Pretty excited, but this is our first trip to the area.

Edit: originally meant for Travel board, but figured I'd keep it here since outdoor board usually delivers.

Garner park is cool for a half day and lunch... as long as you are not going on a holiday weekend, as it gets crowded.

The river is really all you need. Take 2 vehicles, use one to drive everyone upriver, float back to camp, then use 2nd vehicle to get the drop off vehicle. There are several different stretches of river to float for different trips each day.
Go to Garner for a day. Climb ol' Baldy and put a rock on the pile for good luck. Go to icebox cave (there are boulders you'll have to climb over, and a warning sign to go around). Play putt putt. Rent kayaks or paddle boats. Swing off the ropes. Go to the dance one night.

Lots of souvenir/tshirt shops to visit. Cute shops in Leakey.

Wildaggie has pretty much nailed all of it. If there are golfers, Concan CC is a pretty nice layout and reasonably priced.

Anyone stay at Camp Riverview RV park within the last 2 years? It used to have several pools in the river that flowed adjacent to the property and was wondering if it was still the same. Were any changes made?

Is Kickapoo Caverns worth a day trip?

When the river is flowing, it's all you need.

If it's a down/dry year, I recommend the bat cave "tour". Pretty well done by the commenter and pretty neat to see millions of little bats flowing out of there. If you're lucky a snake will come catch a few and give you a show. Ask anyone in town about it and they'll give you time and location.

If it's not a holiday weekend, go to the river in front of Baldy (Right below the Garner damn). Great rope swings and super deep beautiful part of the river.

2nd for mama choles. Best enchiladas I've ever had. Neal's is pretty good and House Pasture. Go to the dance one night in garner, the kids will love it.

Don't overlook the fishing opportunities- went with wife and kids 15 years ago and caught a lot of bass on baby flukes and fat Albert grubs - we were the only ones fishing for bass for the 3 days we spent out there. Went to south llano state park for 2nd half of week and had very similar activities available

Check out the Lost Maples Winery in Vanderpool, approx. 20 minutes from Leakey. Kid and pet friendly. They usually have live music and sometimes a food truck.

Was in Concan at 7 Bluffs last week. Water was flowing and the float from 7 Bluffs to Frio Country was about 2-2.5 hours.

Water is the clearest I've seen in years.

It might have been because the recent rains but the flies and gnats were brutal at the camp site. Other than that it was great.
