Sadly, the engines both ran when I bought it. They just sat while I worked on the transmission - the initial problem worked on at the start of this project, and part of the reason for the sale (because I was a dumbass and didn't run the engines over that period of time). That's a mistake I won't be making again.

I do believe that in a month or so, I will be up and running, at least I hope so, if the estimate is something I can work with. Fingers crossed.

BOAT meaning - it's real- lol. I hope you get all your issues fixed.. sometimes it seems you just can't keep up w a boat.

i have 2 boats and both are getting worked on right now. I have a fuel issue on one boat so I met with a Yamaha mechanic today and he's hoping to replace my 2 engine fuel filters and clean the injectors next week. He will flush and rinse my fuel tanks as well as add a new 3 way valve and replace the fuel line from the 3 way valve into the engine (he thinks ethanol in the small grey fuel line he's replacing is the problem)

2nd boat has a generator mechanic working on it next week.

it never stops !

Bittersweet update not directly related to the boat.

Last Fall, a good friend (he was kind of like an uncle) of our family passed away due Lymphoma - he had been battling it for several years. He and my dad, along with 2 other friends had done the Great Loop on of the guys' trawlers, and I'd known him since I was a toddler. Like me, he loved to fish, and he did so all over the world. He had already given me a few fishing rods and reels for the boat, as he wasn't going to use them (among them a Penn International 80 combo, wow).

Well, my parents and his widow are still very close, and a couple of weeks ago, she told my dad that she had some things for me that her husband wanted me to have. He and I had fished together a lot with my dad when we were growing up, and he had been following the boat project as well; he knew how much I loved fishing, and none of his sons were really all that into it, so he had told her he wanted me to have some of his fishing stuff. The heart wrenching part of it all was when his widow told me that he had really been hoping to get to ride on the boat before we lost him. However, I know he is up there watching now, and is going to do whatever he can to help me get it running.

'Some' of his fishing stuff included 2 dozen rods, with even more reels, including some antique ones, several nautical charts with his favorite fishing spots marked (most out of Grand Isle), 7 fishing nets, countless spools of line and fishing lures, tackle boxes and more. Here is the really fun part of it - the majority of the rods (and they are of ALL types) are custom rods that he built himself. And in addition to those rods, I was given his rod building tools - his lathe, supplies, more thread than I know what to do with, and his rod making books, all autographed by the various authors to him. There is also other stuff, but I either haven't sorted through it yet, or simply don't know what it is.

I had considered learning the craft before, but now am definitely going to learn. I don't have pictures yet, I just picked it all up, and it almost didn't all fit in my truck. I have a busy weekend, and next week is pretty busy as well, so I doubt I will post pics before then, but I will as soon as I can - I *might* be able to get a few tomorrow.

On the boat side, I am still waiting for the engine rebuild estimate from the mechanics, at which point that should get started. Anyway, in the 20 minutes I had before concert madness today, I thought I would share at least some kind of update.

I had a diesel firewater pump engine overheat last fall. Cooling water loop was plugged. Cleared the plugging and it started cooling again. Mechanics came and checked it out, said it was running great and it was. Told us to use it like normal. During the freeze we had some firewater header pressure issues in the plant and it ran more than normal. Now it has a really bad knock. We're waiting on an "autopsy" from Cummins. I think this all stems from the overheating event, but the real problems didn't show up for awhile.

We found a missing tote of PFAS when we ran our firewater pumps. The hard way.

Posted this in a separate thread as well, but looking for all input I can get, as I am definitely not an expert:

I just got the quote back for just the parts for the starboard engine rebuild. Literally just a pass through from the parts shop, the email was attached?

OEM parts: Around $16,000

Aftermarket parts (Im assuming China): $3860

Are the OEM parts really worth 4 times as much? I don't have a brand name on those. I was kind of expecting OEM to be 2x, but 4x surprised me...

Any input?

Thanks for the response,

For me it depends on what parts are needed???
Some items replaced with aftermarket parts will be just fine while for others it may be best to replace with OEM.
The mechanic should be able to offer some guidance.
But for the most part, I would not be afraid to use aftermarket items provided they are coming from known sources/vendors. That's a huge cost difference so considering aftermarket parts is certainly warranted.
Best of luck.

That's where I am myself. Vendor is very reputable from the people I have asked.

I was just shocked to see THAT much of a price difference, and I know that I don't know enough about diesels yet. I am certainly leaning towards the aftermarket at this point unless there is a very real reason not to. Thank you.

How old are the engines? Could be that OEM is harder to source due to age.

Here's what you do. You get yourself ten grand. Take six of it to work and place it on black (Wesley Snipes wouldn't lead us astray). It hits, you get OEM. It hits red or green, you get Chinese.

Brilliant. Why didn't i think of that!

Engines are from 1986. I'm sure that's part of it. Mechanics in my previous talks had said they prefer OEM, but did price both (I did not ask them to). I'm trying to track down where the aftermarket parts are coming from.

With that much of a price difference, you can buy two sets of aftermarket. If they are that much more unreliable, there is a spare on hand.

Prob is these are likely mostly internal, pistons, rings, sleeves, ect. So to replace a second time is no easy task. Having said all that, i'd still lean heavily towards non OEM.
