I'm growing a garden out in the Houston burbs and have a few raised beds with various items. I snagged some dirt from my parents land out in the country to fill in the boxes instead of buying the crappy stuff in store and apparently we had a transplant!

I have been trying like hell to figure out what this melon vine was that sprouted between my okra plants and I think I narrowed it down to the gulf coast melon. It was probably growing wild along the fence line where I grabbed the fill dirt. Anyone have experience with these guys? Good to eat? Tasty?

Are you sure it's a watermelon? Looks like a common wild gourd to me. I have never heard of anyone eating them. They're probably toxic.

Do they smell lemony? We called them lemon melons. They are extremely bitter, but coyotes loved them.

They don't smell lemony but I think that's what a gulf coast melon technically is. Apparently they turn yellow when ripe. Internet says they can be tasty if picked at the right time so I'm considering leaving the plant instead of pulling it all up. The plant itself has gotten really big.

Grow in bar ditches and they turn yellow. I knew a guy who used to eat them, but I don't recall if I ever heard how he prepared them or whatever.

We used to call those "stink melons" and had some great wars throwing them at each other. Pigs loved eating them.

Piss melons was another name that I had forgotten until you mentioned it.

We use to play "war" as a kid in the corn and maize fields. Then get back home and get chewed out by my uncles for spreading seeds.

I'm back. I let the damn thing keep going and now I'm pretty convinced yall are all wrong but also who the hell knows.

So the fruits have ripened and are indeed a lemon colored yellow. The only thing throwing me off is that it doesn't stink? At all? In fact, I've cut a few open and they smell pretty dang good. Exactly like a cucumber with a faint lemony hint.

The ole chat gpt tells me I have a cucumber lemon plant but it's also told me it was "certain" 4 different times before giving it some new information. I'm rambling now so I'll throw some pictures and get y'all's feedback again.

We have to actively control these in cotton and milo fields in Burleson county. I don't know if it's what they're actually called, but we call them smell melons even though they don't really stink in our fields. Could be a different species or different strain than what people recall being smell melons. They will 100% bind up a cotton picker if you let them take over an area.

They are edible, you can pickle them, I had a guy who worked for me who would bring a little salt to the field and snack on them. I'm not sure how many calories they pack, but that never stopped him. I had to remind him to wash the fruit because in research fields they get greater than normal applications of pesticides.

We used to call those gourds when I was a kid (obviously not gourds). Wed hit them with sticks (since we didn't have bats) and see how far we could hit them. If they busted and didn't go anywhere,'it was an out. Good times being poor and making up games to play.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

This is what I'm looking for! Some places say they are toxic but I want to see if they are good for something. I mean it can't be bad for a margarita or pickling right?

There was so much potential here. Can we not slap in a few pics of some actual Gulf Coast melons we all showed up to see?

I had a bite of one and it tasted generically like "plant" to me. Not grass per se, just "plant".
