I've got some spare cash and it's time to upgrade. What's your favorite fly rod for chasing redfish?? I plan on using this for a long time so price isn't a huge concern. Just looking for the best rod I can use for the next several years.

Thanks!

Lots of good rods but I think the best is the Orvis Helios.

Go to a couple shops and cast a few to see which one you like best.

I wouldve said different until I got my hands on an Orvis Helios 8WT and cast it a few weeks ago

I agree with chocolate labs on casting several. Lots of high end fly rods. After casting several (Winston, Sage, orvis, Scott), I ended up with a Scott.

The current best two choices for a Salt Water 8 weight are Orvis Helios and Scott Sector.

The newest orvis Helios rods are amazing . A guide I've used for years and hated Orvis has them on his boat now. Definitely cast some before you buy. Any of the shops that carry them should have some demo rods. Just threw a 9 wt in Turks and Caicos for some bonefish in some hellacious winds. My brother who is much less experienced could cast it much better than the other rods.

I'm a fan of the Hardy Marksman or the G Loomis NRX+. If you can find one, the Hardy Zane Pro is an excellent rod as well and marked down since it was the predecessor of the Marksman. It's a really versatile rod and has the ass to speed up if you want it too, but also loads great on the short/intermediate shots.

I haven't gotten a chance to throw the newest Helios, but I was a big fan of the Helios 3.

Like mentioned above, if you have access to a shop throw their inventory so you get a rod that matches your casting style.

Didn't feel like spending Helios money so I got a TFO Mangrove and have really enjoyed it.

Big fan of G. Loomis. I have a five weight, and gonna purchase a six weight. They cast very well for me.
My son has an Orvis ReCon 5 weight and a Clearwater eight weight. He wants a Scott next, but he needs to graduate and get a job to pay for it!

If you are making quick short shots in the marsh you might want a shorter rod with more backbone than some of the fancy rods suggested here. I love my 10ft 7wt helios for laying out long casts but most of the time I grab my 8'3" Redington predator 9wt. Overlined Tfo bvk 7wt is another good choice for this (possibly the mangrove suggested above, I'm not familiar with that one). A failed quest for one of the old sage largemouth combos put me on the path of the predator and bvk

Edit: lol you asked for 8wt and I suggested 7s and 9s. Sorry!

this guy has guided fly fishing all over the place....salt and fresh

I'd start with what he said and that'll probably be where you'll finish too!!

Well said. His wife is a pretty good authority on the subject as well! Between the two they have forgot more than most will know.

"Best" is a highly subjective term in this arena and a lot depends on your casting style and desired use.

An 8wt that would be great for long casts to bonefish isn't likely to be the same for sniping reds at pretty reasonably distances on Texas flats.

I haven't bought a new fly rod in a while so I don't have a ton of rod specific advice but I also think that there really haven't been a lot of significant advancements in rod tech in the last several years so while I'm a big fan of Scott rods (I have 3 Tidals and one S3S) and I loved the Meridian a guide down in Key West had me use I'm not sure $1100 for the Sector is worth it, despite that probably being an outstanding rod.

You would probably be very happy with the Scott Wave for $700. The Tidal has been discontinued but it retailed for less than $500 and IMHO it was every bit as good of a rod as the Scott Meridian which was the high-end rod they had at the time. I was told the Tidal & Meridian were built on the same blank but the Meridian had higher-end components.

Similarly, I haven't cast the current generation of Orvis Helios and I'm sure it's great I'm not sure it's worth $1100.

I also have a Hardy ProAxisX which is a couple generations old- it was succeeded by the Zephyrus (sp?) and then by the MarksmanZ. I haven't cast the Marksman so I can't say but the Zephyrus was a great rod, a bit lighter swing weight than the ProAxisX.

Anyway, I'm rambling but I'd make sure to cast any rod you're thinking of buying because there's lots of great rods out there but "Best" is subjective.

I've paid a lot for top-level gear and just my personal opinion but if I'm paying $1000 for a fly rod it's going to be 100% custom made and not a production rod.

When I went through this process I landed on the Sage RPLXi 8 weight in a 5-piece setup. Love it.

Scott Sector is the answer. I've got a whole quiver of them. For the OP, depending on your casting stroke and experience, try the SA infinity salt or the relatively new SA bonefish plus as line choices.

But the best advice I got years ago was to invest at least as much money as a high end rod in a series of progressive casting lessons w a pro casting instructor.

If you are a big G. loomis fan, check out Northfork Composites. Gary Loomis sold G. Loomis and now manufactures Northfork Composites used by many custom builders. I have two 10' 4 wts, 7 wt and a 9' 9 wt rod (over lined with a 10 wt line). Great blank kits!!

You are probably not going to want to hear this, but most people can't tell the difference between their grandfather's Pfleuger and a sector or Helios or whatever. If you are not an accomplished caster and understand how the rod works, you will be a bad caster with whatever rod you have. For me, I like a rod with a lot of backbone and a softer tip as opposed to the ultra fast rods intended for carrying line at distance. I am not competition casting but trying to load quickly for short, dump shots with accuracy from the front of a skiff. I have a Helios I over line with a heavier 9 weight line with a short head like the Igniter series from SA. I bought a Sage Maverick and it handles nicely with a similar line matched to 8. Of course, I use both mostly for sight fishing for reds here in Texas. However, I have had great casting rods from TFO that did not have the same fit and finish as those outfits but still did the job more than adequately. Like all things in fishing, the retailer is trying hardest to catch the consumer.

Gary's company is and has been Edge for several years. I have two of his 8 weights and I like them. They sell direct to you.

This supports my post above about casting lessons. I cast in the yard 3-5 days a week. My practice rod isnt one of my high dollar rods because it sits rigged in the garage all the time. It's an 8 wt TFO BVK I bought in 2018, my first fly rod purchase. I cast it just as well as my sectors.

Yes, he has a separate company that makes finished rods. Now you know the rest of the story

That's probably an extreme characterization because first, Pflueger never made fly rods but they did make some cool old reels (I have a couple) and second, because an old fiberglass rod is going to be waaaaaay different. Now if you said 99% of people aren't going to be able to tell between a TFO BVK and a Sector.

I've owned a TFO Mangrove that was very clunky and heavy, but a decent rod.

I now have a Winston B2X that is great, but it doesn't see much water time since I'm in a landlocked state and I'm not close to steelhead waters.

That being said, I've fished a Helios on a guided trip, and they are great.

My go-to rod is a Scott Radian in 6wt, and it's the best rod ever. I'm a big fan of Scott rods and will recommend them hands down if you want to spend some money.

I tried the Mangrove in 8wt and IMHO it was a dog but the 10wt Mangrove is an outstanding rod. The 8wt might do better under-lining it with a 7wt line.

I broke mine and got it replace and then sold it.

TFO warranty is phenomenal, and I can't recommend them enough because of it.

My Sage Salt R8 feels great. Great for redfish.

Last time I was tarpon fishing I used my guide's Helios 11wt and it was very, very nice. Worth giving a look at a Helios in 8wt.

This is a very subjective question and there are definitely multiple right answers.

my pre-retirement plan includes leaving my future one piece tarpon rod in Florida and my guide will have it on the skiff when I get there til I have my own place in the Keys.

My Scott Sector 8wt is nails, can't go wrong with one. Next 8wt will be the Orvis Helios 4D, I fished one in Charleston last year and was really impressed.

Who did you fish with in Charleston? Have been 3 days out of Charleston with one guide over the past 2 years and got 2 shots and no eats in 3 days. I need to change guides.

Thanks for all of the feedback. And I agree - everyone will have their own opinion. Sounds like Helios and Sector are the overall favorites. Those 2 were on my list and I will go test them.

I've been using a BVK for years and like it. But will be adding a new rod to the quiver soon.

Looking forward to getting out and testing a few.

Lowcountry Premier, Capt LJ, caught several flood tide reds (could have been several more if it was just me) and he put in a full days work helping my wife who has been trying to learn.
