They are not scared of you like they are lions and leopard. They will square up and defend their territory and their young because they are territorial and protective mothers. But I would not call that provoking in the sense of antagonizing the animal to the point of self defense. They will do the same to Gazelle and impala.

Agreed, but whatever the motivation they are set off well in advance, which is the opposite of bagging an unsuspecting animal through hunting skill.

Limpopo is brushy. Did a safari 10+ yrs ago there without really knowing the terrain we were getting into. It was not wide open savannah like you see on wildlife TV shows, it was miles of trees and brush and reminded me of every fall in central TX. Gotta keep multiple heads on swivels.

I have heard of Cape Buffalo running away after being shot, only to circle back after the shooter.

100%. The buff I shot did this exact thing. But we gave him a good wait and we found him dead behind a tree. Trackers tracked his blood trail and he double backed to wait for us.
